The other night, I was relaxing in a bit of bubbly. Now that I’m a mom of three, that bubbly is in the form of a bubble bath and not champagne but the results are (almost) the same. It’s my downtime, and I love grabbing a favorite magazine to read in peace and quiet. In that magazine, I came across an ad for the new Canon EOS Rebel SL1 camera and it caught my eye. The creative ad shared how small and lightweight this camera was. It’s actually the worlds smallest and lightest DSLR camera!
I purchased my first DSLR camera in 2010 before my third child was born and have never looked back. I’ve taken a photography course to learn more about DSLR cameras and have taken some amazing photos (if I do say so myself!) Yet, many times the photos I post on Facebook of my kids at events, in the backyard, or even just inside the house are taken with my iPhone. The reason why is because my DSLR is – like most – pretty bulky. Having a great camera bag helps, but it’s still one more thing to lug around when lugging around multiple other things. The Canon EOS Rebel SL1 ad interested me for that reason.
A few days later, the magazine left by the side of our tub, I had forgotten about the ad when I received an amazing email! I was chosen along with 9 other bloggers in Canada to – wait for it – review the Canon EOS Rebel SL1! I was so happy to be hand selected for this program and when I received the camera (and additional Canon EF 40mm f2.8 STM Lens) it was like Christmas had come early!
A list of features of the Canon EOS Rebel SL1 can be found at the link, and of them the ones that excite me the most beyond the camera’s less bulky size are it’s performance in low light (always an issue for me when taking photos), the touch screen with new scene modes (enabling you to edit your photos right on the camera, in a separate file) and continuous shooting mode (hopefully enabling me to capture the perfect non-eyes closed, non-blurred moment!)
It’s actually been a month of feeling like Christmas has come early in our household with the Canon EOS Rebel SL1 just added to that joy. Why? We have a new family member!
Last week, we picked up our Labradoodle puppy Cali from the airport (I bet you can’t guess where she came from!) and have been adjusting to life as a family of 5 plus dog. It’s been an adventure so far, and I’m happy to say that we’re almost sleeping through the night again, and I can’t wait to share her with all of you on the blog.

My iPhone has been my go to camera as of late, sad isn’t it? I had received a great camera a couple of years ago, but got transferred and the charger was “lost” in the move. I feel as I’ve missed out on taking capturing those special moments, that I may have with a camera vs the cell phone. A real camera has been on my wish list for years, it’s just not in the budget. I enjoyed shooting pictures on my father’s Cannon camera on slides film back in the late 80’s. I have all of those slides to this day. Luckily today we have digital photos that can be printed and shared electronically and on socail media, I have a Cannon Elf for important photo opportunities and the grainy photos taken with my Blackberry. Life moments are too important to miss taking great photos of.

Since I have been using my phone for taking photos, I think it may be time to upgrade to an actual camera. My last digital camera was really good for its’ time, but is 7mp and doesn’t stand up now. Hence using my phone.
The photo you took of the Asian Noodle Salad has really nice light as far as ‘bows of stuff’, but my fave for composition is the blueberry tarts – very pretty! I like how you are playing around with angles and patterned backgrounds. Very chatelaine.

I noticed a HUGE difference in the quality of your pictures, especially the recipe ones. Even though I’m a regular on your blog and knew that you’ve taken the course, I still can not believe sometimes how much your photos improved (you’ll have to retake all the rest of your pictures to wipe that reminder completely :))

I like that its Canons smallest and lightest DSLR. I sometimes skip bringing my DSLR because its so heavy! This one would go everywhere with me. So that would be the best part portability and with the 40MM lens attached this would (almost) be as portable as a digital cam. Though you cannot compare point and shoot with a DSLR.

Recently both of our (my wifes and my) point and shoot cameras have died! Her casio no longer zooms and my Canons screen no longer works. This has left us with nothing but our iphones to take pictures. With a 14month old daughter and an active 3 year old puppy, capturing the moments of both them has been a challenge!!! I have been battling body dysmorphia my entire life and have recently been working really hard to overcome it. I would love this camera so I can start to take photos with my friends and actually capture some memories.

I really like the crockpot loaded baked potato soup recipe photo! It’s perfectly lit. I love the interest created by the balance of the colours if the toppings in the three bowls and the depth comes through with the table cloth, napkin and garlic placement. This one is my favourite 🙂
