Lotus Weighted Blankets

Sleep, beautiful wonderful oh-so-peaceful sleep has become the priority in my life this past year due to my medical diagnosis. Funny how the one thing we fought as a child becomes the one thing we crave as an adult! We know as a whole adults are not getting the amount of sleep needed nightly (research shows that adults need at least seven hours of sleep every night to function effectively throughout the day), and sadly many children and teenagers are not either. Did you know that new parents lose the equivalent of 6 months worth of sleep in their child’s first 2 years of life? There are a variety of reasons why we all miss out on the sleep we need, but how can we work to make sleep better?

LOTUS Plush Blanket

I now stick to a strict bedtime, use a fan for white noise, have an amazing new mattress, and love love love using a weighted blanket. I share my love of weighted blankets whenever I’m talking about sleep (with friends, on the radio, or with total strangers in a store if they happen to be looking at one). A weighted blanket, to me, feels like going to sleep with a hug. And, that feeling actually is proven to help reduce stress and anxiety.

From LotusBlankets.ca:

Studies suggest weighted blankets may create a natural boost in mood, ease stress and anxiety, promote deeper sleep, encourage athletic recovery, and soothe Restless Leg Syndrome. LOTUS™ weighted blanket combines luxury finishes with proven science to ground you in feelings of security, stability, and safety.  The act of sleeping with a weighted blanket encourages Deep Touch Pressure Stimulation (DTPS).

DTPS can mimic the feeling of being hugged, swaddled or cradled. According to a 2009 study by Temple Grandin, Ph.D in the Journal of Child and Adolescent Psychopharmacology, DTPS has a calming effect in children with autism and ADHD, and a similar relaxing effect in adults without a medical diagnosis.

Deep pressure encourages the production of serotonin, a hormone involved in elevating mood. Serotonin is also a precursor to melatonin, a hormone responsible in the regulation of sleep. In other words, deep pressure therapy can play a positive role to help with both mood and sleep.

LOTUS is based right here in Saskatchewan, so when they reached out I was really happy to hear about a local business that promotes weighted blankets. When purchasing a weighted blanket, be careful about the contents inside used as weights and where they’re coming from. LOTUS™ is the only Eco-Friendly, Luxury Weighted Blanket made with fabrics certified by Oeko-Tex® Standard 100 and recycled premium lead free glass beads. This means our products are clean and safe, and made with soft premium cotton that’s cool and breathable for year-round use.

LOTUS Air Blanket

The one and only issue I had with my first weighted blanket was that it was too warm in the summer, so I had to transition to not using it in the warmer months and was so happy to have it back now in the fall when the house is cooler at night. LOTUS Air blankets are NOT HOT, meaning you can use them for year-round-use.

LOTUS™ Air uses soft, premium cotton, designed to be cool and breathable for year-round use in all climates. Our LOTUS™ Plush will a little warmer than a regular blanket but will provide the ultimate grounding experience. The weight comes from glass micro-beads which are not heat trapping.

The general guide is to choose a blanket that’s 8 to 12 percent of your body weight. If you fall in the middle of the range, there are a few factors to consider. Choose the 10 lb if you usually sleep on your side, or have joint pain, especially in your knees, hips, or back. Choose the 15 lb weight if you are a healthy adult who usually sleeps on their front or back. I use a 10lb blanket and it’s perfect for me!

A LOTUS weighted blanket would be an amazing gift to give a loved one this holiday season. Santa would also certainly get a lot of love and thanks if he brought one to leave by the tree! Husbands – if your wife sent you this post, this hint is for you!

The interesting thing is that way way before I ever heard about them, I’d do this thing, when super anxious, where I’d lie down on the hard floor, chest to the floor, and it’d calm me down a bit….I know, it sounds odd, but, it was the pressure of the floor on my racing heart that I wanted, especially, along with pressure in general, and that’s how I got it.
