We are a digital family, without a doubt.  I love my electronics and it would be hypocritical of me to deny my kids the same when they see a laptop or iPhone at my side all day.  Still, we need to be responsible digital users and that involves doing research on products before we buy them, and being aware of products once they are in our children’s hands.

My kids have iPods, for example, but my 5-year-old isn’t allowed to access the internet on hers and my 9-year-old doesn’t have any of the peer-chat apps available to download.  They also have a few other children’s tablets that they love just as much as their iPods, sometimes even more.  So, when presented with the option to review the new VTech InnoTab 3S, we were definitely on board!

VTech innotab 3sPresented as best for 3-9 year olds, I thought it would be great for my daughters who are 2.5 and almost 6 so we opted for a pink tablet!  When it arrived, we had to go online and do a few simple set-up steps but other than that, it was charged and ready to go.  I love that the Innotab 3S comes with an AC adapter because it definitely helps having the ability to plug-in when the battery is drained (plugging in recharges the device too!)

The InnoTab 3S has wifi access kid connect vtechBUT the sites that your children can access are all pre-approved kid-safe websites (love this!)

One of the best features – for me – of the InnoTab 3S is Kid Connect, which enables kids to “text” their parents from the InnoTab!  It took me a bit to figure out how to set up Kid Connect (there’s no App waiting for you in Learning Lodge, but it’s in My Settings) but once I signed up for it, I just had to download an App for my iPhone and we were ready to go!

It’s been fun “texting” back and forth with Nevaeh.  You can send messages, little pictures (gifts) with the basic Kid Connect.  If you pay for the Premium version, you can send voice messages, photos and drawings too.  I’m tempted to get it but it’s $19.99 in the Learning Lodge for download, so I’ll have to see how much we use the free version first!

As you can see, Nevaeh is just learning how to send messages, I’m not exactly sure what she was telling me here!  We’ve been having a blast with it though!

The 180 degree rotating camera has been a hit too – just like mom’s phone you can take a selfie or take photos of the world in front of you.  Kids can also take video!  The quality is 2.0 MP, close to what my first digital camera was years ago!  Then, using a feature called Wonder Cam, the kids can create funny pictures of themselves using over 55 effects.

This and much more is waiting – ready to go – on the InnoTab 3S!
