Laundry Tips for Summer (and School Year) Success!

The flip of the calendar from July to August brings with it a change in focus and perspective, don’t you think? Here in Saskatchewan, due to the late September holiday students actually go back to school August 31st this year. So yes, by the end of this month summer is officially ‘over’, at least in the carefree way we celebrate it!

I’ve been shifting my focus to school supplies, clothes, and arranging my Tupperware cupboard so that I can make my mornings run a little smoother when it comes to packing lunches.

I’ve also made some changes in my laundry room and my friends at P&G are who I have to thank for it. Before doing a recent television segment on laundry tips, I invested in a laundry sorter from Bed Bath and Beyond to see if it really is as time-saving and organized as it’s supposed to be.

laundry sorter from bed bath and beyondTrue story, it actually is! I keep my laundry sorter in my bedroom instead of the laundry room and bring each hanging-hamper down to the laundry room as needed (it conveniently hangs on the doorknob too). No more digging through an overflowing laundry hamper to sort – everything is sorted as it goes in (in our house that’s towels, whites, darks, colors!)

Recently, I visited Global Regina Morning News to share my top laundry tips including new Tide HE Turbo which dissolves better than other HE detergents, cutting down on your laundry wash time making you more efficient, woo!

Aside from using a laundry sorter to make laundry more efficient, other tips I shared include:

1) Carry a Tide To Go Pen with you on the go, for instant stain removal. Also, at home ensure you’re pre-treating stains before washing.
2) Use a laundry/lingerie bag for dedicates.
3) Wash in cold water with a detergent specifically for use in cold water (like Tide Coldwater Clean)
4) Using a product like Tide HE Turbo will cut down on your laundry time because of the smart suds technology (less suds means less rinsing). You can also cut down on waste by using a product like Tide Pods because it gives you a measured amount of detergent every time!

Tenille LafontaineWhile all these laundry tips have been a game-changer for me, I still haven’t figured out a way to get the laundry folded and put away, so I’m still working on that! What’s your go-to laundry tip or hack? Share and you could be one of our winners!

  • I love using Tide cold and only use this brand I do laundry late at night which has lower energy usage costs.

  • I like to use tide pods. It makes life so much easy. Just toss in the tide pod and go no measuring required.

  • I wash clothes as soon as it starts to pile up,so it dont get too much of a PILE!

  • I use baking soda to remove grease/oil stains out of my husband’s coveralls. Just add with your laundry soap

  • I soak heavily soiled/stained clothes in a small amount of hot water before I wash them

  • My best tip is fold the laundry as it comes off the lie. Otherwise it sits around in the basket for far too long.

  • I let the kids sort their own laundry by lights, darks, delicates…and put them into 3 different baskets.

  • I always make sure clothes are unbuttoned, unzipped, sleeves pulled out, nothing inside out, and socks unfurled when they go in the laundry basket. It saves me time when I put them away! I also keep a laundry bag hooked on my basket for delicates. They go right in the mesh bag, and when ready, get s zipped and washed. Also, I buy good detergent!! Buying Tide means I use less, and have clean clothes! 🙂

  • I traded in and up for a large top loading HE washing machine and dryer. Now I can do 3 times the amount of clothes as compared to my old 70’s set that came with our house! I save time and money! It’s a win win ?

  • My best tip is to fold the laundry right away while it’s still warm from the dryer.

  • I don’t really have much in terms of tips…but I love all the ones I have read here. I have to try out some of these tips. I especially love the one where you would use dish detergent on grease stains. How cool is that! Makes perfect sense!!!

  • i dont use a dryer it shrinks my clothes i hang it on the line it works well. i wash everything in cold i save on the heating cost and water cost

  • I put everything into sorted laundry bags since our front load machine has chewed up too many clothes

  • I hang most stuff up to dry in my basement and just use the drier to get out wrinkles.

  • I always try to pre-treat stains as they happen so that I don’t forget them before throwing the clothes in the wash. I also don’t let laundry pile up too long before doing it so that it is not such a big job.

  • For my bed sheets, I love to add an essential oil to the wash to give it that extra relaxing scent.

  • Clothes that cannot be fully dried in the dryer, stick them in to get the wrinkles out for a few minutes and then hang them on a hanger to finish drying.

  • For the ones that own a front loader or a washer that has the quick cycle, do your wash on that, still washes and cleans your clothes but in half the time, and laundry gets done a lot sooner!!

  • My mom taught me to use baby powder to put on oil stain first before putting the clothes in the laundry

  • Teach the kids early on how to wash, they’ll only get better with age! lol It’s a win win situation, as it helps with the household, and it teaches them life skills as well…

  • My simple laundry hack is to make my husband do the laundry! Haha! But seriously, my tip is to pretreat stains before washing and also make sure you are using the right detergent, some are specifically made for HE machines!

  • I use separate laundry basket to separate darks, whites and colours. It makes it easier when it’s time to do the laundry.

  • I give my kids their own laundry basket. When they are out of clothes are the basket is full, it’s their job to put their clothes in the washer and ask us to help with detergent.

  • I just had a technician in last week to service our washer. He said Tide HE is one of the best detergents to use and make sure you don’t use more than 2 tablespoons as you don’t need it. Also run a hot load at least once a week and use a cup of vinegar with towels and sheets.

  • If I get greasy stains or food on clothes I will take my dish soap right away and wash dab it on the stain and put it in the laundry always takes if off

  • My tip is don’t leave the laundry pile up, it is allot easier to just put one load away at a time.

  • Never let the laundry pile up. Do it before it gets to be too bigger of a pile.

  • tide pods for sure, as I didn’t realize I was using way more soap than Needed! The Tide pods help me save time and money!

  • Convince smaller children that looking for their clothes in the clean laundry is a treasure hunt!

  • If you have a stubborn stain that you have not been able to remove try putting it in the sun. Often the sun will fade a stain.

  • My laundry tip is to hang dry most of my clothes so they last longer. It has allowed me to pass clothes down to my second child that look new still.

  • Soaking smelly sweaty clothes or musty towels in a cup of vinegar and water before washing will remove the smells compared to laundry soap alone.

  • My tip: use baby powder on grease stains to help absorb the oil, use dish soap on that spot, and then wash normally.
    Cheers.

  • I put hand washable into mesh laundry bags and wash on gentle. So much easier than hamdwashing!

  • When I have some stains I can’t get out, I use peroxide, Dawn dish detergent and a little baking soda to scrub them out before washing!

  • I hang up clothes as soon as they come out of the dryer. This way so much less ironing needs to be done

  • If I do not have stain remover I use a dot of liquid laundry detergent and let it sit in a bit before getting to the load of laundry.

  • We have hard water but I don’t have a softener. So to help my detergent on really dirty loads, I add 1/4 cup of course salt to my load and 1/2 cup of vinegar.

  • This is one I just learned about a few weeks ago. For delicate clothing that needs to be handwashed, you can rinse and “spin” out excess out water in a salad spinner. I picked up a dollar store salad spinner and it works great for this.

  • my hack is to try to not buy clothes that need special laundry treatment lol… but also by a rack to air dry even in the winter indoors

  • i only do laundry int he evenings, usually after the kids go to bed, and i treat stains as soon as possible.

  • I always wait until their is a full load and when clothes is ready to be put away I roll them to make more room in the drawers.

  • Soak the stains before putting it in the washing machine!

I love Tide – My favourite brand!!

  • 1) Use a clothes line to save $$$’s and get a fresh sunshiney scent to your clothes. 2) If you have an HE washer, use ONLY HE specific detergent. 3) Treat stains right away – Tide Laundry pens or dish detergent work wonders. 4) If a stain doesn’t come out, DON’T put the item in the dryer – that sets the stain pretty much permanently. Also, always check pockets to make sure expensive car keys don’t get ruined!

  • We rinse in cold water and hang our clothes out on the line in nice weather to help save money. We also wash our clothes during the cheaper electricity rates.

  • We try to separate the laundry by colour and material (wool, delicate, etc) when we toss it into the laundry hamper. Saves time on sorting when it’s laundry time

  • Before drying, I always fling out my clothes. I find that it helps get rid of the wrinkles.

  • My tip is to involve your children as much as possible. My children fold all the laundry and put their clothes away. This makes my life much easier 🙂

  • I love Tide cold water been using it for a long time BUT Tide has been in my family for over 50 years. Thanks for the chance to win.

  • Insteand of presoaking clothes with stain guard – I put a dab of toothpaste mixed with 1 tbsp of baking soda – removes stubborn stain. Rinse and Wash. Little trick I learnt from my Mom. Trust me it works.

  • I try to get hubby to sort his laundry instead of leaving it in a pile. We have two hampers one n the bedroom & one in the bathroom.

  • I soak my son’s white school shirts which always come home stained (seriously white for kindergarten?) to treat the stains then wash

  • In the summer hang your clothing out to dry, this will cut the cost and the fresh smell is lovely. Thank you.

  • I have found that treating stains right away if possible is the best. Using quality detergents is totally worth the extra cost for me too!

  • I try to pretreat stains as they happen. Using Tide Cold Water HE I get my clothes clean and save money on my gas bill.

  • I add vinegar and borax to my really dirty loads to boost the detergent. And I don’t use as much detergent as the manufacturer’s recommend. Works just as well and makes the detergent go further.

  • I always pre treat stubborn stains with Dawn Dish Soap. It really helps with grease and oil stains

  • I treat stains as soon as they happen. Love having the TIde pen everywhere I go.

  • Treat stains as soon as you see them! And dry your clothes on a clothesline. Nothing smells better!!

  • My best tip is to not leave loads in the dryer, fold them as soon as the buzz 🙂

  • I like to keep Tide pens handy. I have them everywhere – In the car, in my purse and easily accessible at home. They have truly been life-savers some days!
