Getting a Boost for Back to School

I don’t know about you, but I’m going to wager that many moms reading this are absolutely exhausted as the end of summer draws near. I spent my morning shopping for back to school supplies and then did some warehouse shopping where I spent an amount that necessitated a text to my husband afterwards saying, “So by the way…I spent a lot on groceries today…” Activities are already on the go for my son, starting in a few weeks for my girls, and I’m still not certain that back to school is a good thing even though I look forward to it every September.

OK, giving my head a shake.

Back to school is a very good thing, and routine is good. Perhaps I might even get better about eating breakfast and also eating a lunch that isn’t in the form of a french fry. Lately, my husband has been on a healthy eating kick, and this time around (yes, we have rounds) he decided he needed to up his protein. So, when looking at healthy lunch ideas from Dempster’s, I had to chuckle when I came across Dempster’s Healthy Way Bread Boost My Protein! Not only can I make a delicious, crisp, sandwich for lunch – I can win at life lunch by giving us a protein boost too!

Isn’t it true how a sandwich always tastes better when someone else makes it? I don’t know why that is, but it’s often the case in our household (and why I always ask my husband to make lunch on the weekends!)  In this case, I had just finished plating and taking a photo of my delicious honey ham sandwich, on two slices of Dempster’s Healthy Way Boost My Protein Bread, along with tomato, lettuce and cheese (OK, and mayo!) when my 6 year old blinked her pretty blue eyes at me and it was gone.

That’s the beauty of these delicious varieties from Dempster’s – the kids have on clue how nutritionally awesome they are!  They just taste good.  That being said, just because a bread, or other product, has a selling feature like boosting my protein, fibre, more veggies, etc., that doesn’t mean I substitute it in place of those nutrients in our diet.  Because, let’s be honest – have you looked at Canada’s Food Guide lately?  Here, I’ll link you here.  I know we’re not meeting our requirements daily as a family, and I will also wager many of you are the same.  I just think that, if we can swap out a regular white bread (my favorite, I admit it!) for an option that can add more whole grains, protein, fibre or other nutrient we’re lacking in our diets, it’s a good thing.  And some days, I can use all the help I can get.
