Slow Cooker Spaghetti Sauce

I use my slow cooker year round but especially love it in the summer when I can prepare easy meals and keep my house cool as well!  One recipe that’s loved year-round here is my slow cooker spaghetti sauce.  I just made a double-batch this week and brought it (along with a garlic loaf) over to a friend’s house who had just been blessed with twin baby boys!  It was a hit there too – and that’s one of the best things about it, if you make a huge batch there’s plenty to share and freeze for later too.

The recipe below is for a single batch – what you see above is a double batch in a 5qt slow cooker.  I need a bigger slow cooker for my big cooking days!

From Scratch: Slow Cooker Spaghetti Sauce

Serves: 4-6
 
Ingredients
  • 1lb hamburger
  • 1 cup diced celery
  • 1 cup diced onion
  • ½ cup diced green pepper
  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms or 1 can sliced mushrooms
  • 2 16oz cans of stewed tomatoes
  • 1 5.5 oz can of tomato paste
  • 1 13oz can tomato sauce
  • 3 TBSP Club House (or whatever brand you like) Greek Seasoning
Instructions
  1. Brown and drain hamburger.
  2. Place hamburger in the slow cooker, stir in the stewed tomatoes, tomato paste and tomato sauce.
  3. Add in the remaining ingredients.
  4. Cover and cook on low all day or even just a few hours - the longer the better!
  5. This recipe doubles well and freezes well too! Don't be concerned about the exact sizes of cans of sauce/tomatoes, I always use what size I happen to have on hand!

  • I would never have thought of using my slow cooker for this, but it would be ideal as spaghetti sauce is a dish that likes to be simmered for a long time.

  • This sauce looks so good. We make our own sauce too and this recipe makes me want to try it this weekend. I have never used my slow cooker fo spaghetti sauce but its a great idea.

  • I tried this but left out the mushrooms (kids are not fans). Tasted pretty good. I think next time I’ll food process the mushrooms til they are unrecognizable and throw them in there too. Bet no one would notice!

  • One day i’ll get a slow cooker! I agree with mousecat – the amount of veggies I pureed and put into our sauces when the kids didn’t eat certain things was amazing.

  • I make my keep my sauce warm in the slow cooker too when doing spaghetti that way you arent tied down to the stove. looks delish

    • Yes! This recipe freezes really well! I always simmer the sauce after it thaws (instead of microwaving it) and that way it eliminates any excess water gained while freezing (which doesn’t seem to amount to much anyway).

  • Oh I am going to do this from now on!! I always just stew my spaghetti sauce in a fry pan for like 2 hours.. crock pot way easier!

  • I always make my own sauce. but I love trying out new recipes. This one is a lot different than mine and sounds really good.

  • I make my own sauces for most everything. This is a lot like my recipe except for the Greek seasoning instead of the spices I use.
    I will give this a try next time I make spaghetti. I like to change things up.
