I have had this recipe, on page one of my recipe book that I keep in my kitchen drawer, for 7 years now! My mom found it in a newspaper, cut it out, and made it for a big family event and it’s been a keeper ever since! The best part about this recipe, aside from how amazing it tastes, is that the ingredients are all items you normally have in your pantry anyway!
Onto the taste! I used to love going out for beef on a bun nights at the local bar in my hometown. This is classic beef on a bun goodness! Use your favorite BBQ and serve on fresh kaiser buns. Top with sliced red onion, coleslaw, mustard, horseradish – it’s up to you! The recipe is delicious and you can tweek it to make it your own with toppings. Leftovers are amazing as well and can be frozen for another day (that is, if you even have leftovers!)
- 1 beef roast
- 1 cup ketchup
- 1 cup BBQ sauce
- 2 cups water
- 1 cup onion
- 2 tbsp vinegar
- 2 tbsp brown sugar
- 2 tbsp worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp chili powder
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp salt
- Place roast in slow cooker.
- Mix all remaining ingredients together in a separate bowl and pour over roast.
- Close lid, cook on low for 8+ hours (or overnight!) or on high for 4-6 hours.
- Near the end of the cooking time, remove lid and shred the beef. It should fall apart easily.
- Cover and keep warm until ready to serve.
- Serve with kaiser buns, mustard, horseradish, red onions or other favorite beef on a bun toppings!
Wow this recipe is mouth watering. I love using my slow cooker and this is definitely one recipe I am going to use. Thank you 🙂
Looks so good, making my mouth water! Thanks for sharing 🙂
This looks so easy to prepare and you are right – I do have all of these ingredients in the pantry. My slow cooker is my lifesaver. I have cooked a lot of amazing things in it and will definitely try this one out.
looks good. I do like that it is all stuff on hand so next time roasts are on sale I will have to grab one. Do you use a particular cut of meat?
I generally buy Sirloin Tip only because it’s a great deal at Costco for 3 in a package. When using your slow cooker, it really doesn’t matter because it comes out shed-tender regardless!
I did this to chicken last night minus the bbq sauce very yummy on chicken. doing meat balls today with it too. love the slowcooker
This would be a big hit with my family for sure!
Love BBQ beef… thank you for all the wonderful recipes…
Something we need to try – we would both love this
This sounds so good. Looks like I may be busy for a while trying out recipes. Thanks for sharing.
Your recipe says serves 8 for 1 beef roast. What size do you typically buy? I’m looking to serve 16, so need to double your recipe. Also, hoping to do it all in one crockpot, so do you think I should bump cook time a little longer, too? Thanks.
Oh, great question! I typically buy a sirloin tip roast, or whatever is on sale sometimes since the slow cooker makes the meat so tender. I’ve never made enough for 16 people but if you have enough room in a crock pot to do it, I say go for it! Cook time may be OK but I would add more liquid after doubling.
throw in a can of Guinness and boom! crazy good
This sounds amazing and something my family would LOVE. I am going to have to pick up a roast and give it a try, thanks for the recipe!
This is one of my favorites and the red onion really added to this dish!! Thank you!
I also linked to your recipe on my blog post about protein! Cheers!

Is there a certain size of roast that I should use for this?
Not particularly – I generally buy a sirloin tip but never really consider the size. There’s lots of liquid with this recipe.
Made this recipe as is. Delicious! There was a lot of excess liquid that I drained off. This is a keeper!
I just IPed it under the stew setting for an hour and then shredded it. Then cooked a little more (20min).
I can’t seem to cook a roast beef, not sure what I do wrong. I will have to try this recipe. What cut of beef do you use!
how big of a roast has anyone used
what kid of vinegar do you use
In this case, just regular white vinegar!
It seems like way too much sauce and too thin. I think I need to take out most of this sauce does it ever get thicker?
You could always use some corn starch to thicken? I don’t find it too thin but everyone is different!
For the beef on a bun recipe it would be helpful to know how many pounds, or how big the beef roast should be and what size onion.
Thanks
Allow half a pound per person and you can’t go wrong.
Can’t use slow cooker at cottage- can this be done in the oven?
My absolute favorite, go-to beef bbq recipe!! I’ve made this countless times!!! So good!
