Snow…rain…snow…rain. That’s been the weather pattern for the past few weeks here, and the dreary grey sky and cooler temps are sure making me migrate to warm sweaters, holiday scents in the house and comfort food! Interesting, isn’t it? In the summer we’re all about grilling but in the cooler months – give me a big ‘ol bowl of comfort and a spoon please!
I’ve been sharing several of my family’s favorite recipes on my blog lately and I’m so happy when someone tries one and loves it too!
Lately, I’ve been making a lot of comfort food because, let’s face it, it just feels so good at the end of a busy, cool, day. Last night I made chili (recipe coming soon) but one of our favorites in this house is Hamburger Soup which can be made in the slow cooker or on the stove. Here is the stove top version.
- Hamburger Soup
- 2 lbs ground beef (this isn’t exact, just use a basic size package)
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ tsp pepper
- ¼ tsp oregano
- ¼ tsp basil
- ⅛ tsp seasoning salt
- 1 pkg onion soup mix
- 1 tbsp soy sauce
- 8 cups boiling water
- 1 can tomato sauce
- 1 cup celery, diced
- ¼ cup celery leaves
- 1 cup sliced carrot
- 1 cup macaroni
- grated cheese (parmesan, mozzarella or cheddar)
- Brown meat in dutch oven pot and drain fat, transfer back to pot
- Add dry seasonings and soy sauce
- Stir in boiling water and tomato sauce
- Cook on stove top for 1 hr at a low simmer
- Add macaroni then continue cooking for 30 minutes
- Top with your favorite cheese and serve
Oh, this looks fabulous. With the cold weather finally making its way to Texas, I’ll be trying more recipes like this soon.
And by cold weather in Texas you probably mean typical summer weather for us here in SK! 😛
Ha – exactly :P!
Ha, probably 😉
I tried the slow cooker version and WOW…. really! It was so delicious, I am making it again on Monday. Thanks for the recipe.
Yay! My friend tried it out and put the noodles in at the beginning (my bad, I wasn’t very clear on that part) which resulted in a bit of a mushy mess. Otherwise, slow cooker or stove = delicious! Glad you liked it!
I made Hamburger Soup a couple weeks ago. Parmesan cheese is a must!
I’ve been pinning your recipes, keep ’em coming! This sounds so good, my kids would love it!
Thank you!
I’ve never fixed hamburger soup before. I’ll definitely be trying this soon!
This sounds good, and as we cook up ground beef in batches and season it ahead of freezing, this would make a good, quick meal for supper. Is there an appropriate substitution for the onion soup mix? We can’t get in the UK-which is too bad because it’s so handy, I sure miss the conveniences of Saskatchewan!
Hi Crystal! I did a quick Google search and this was the first hit (though there’s others!) Give it a shot? http://www.food.com/recipe/substitute-for-1-envelope-onion-soup-mix-186221

I was looking for some warm comfort food. After the US election results I just need a hug 🙂 and some warm soup is the same thing. I was attracted to this soup because it is titled EASY! and that’s how I love to cook at home. I make versions on this recipe depending what I have in house. Thanks for this suggestion 🙂
