My Fabulous Life

But I like pretty shiny things. =(

This past weekend, I noticed a gorgeous diamond necklace on a friend and casually pointed it out to my husband as something I would love to have.  He, in his dry wit, commented that if I wanted to buy myself a necklace, any necklace really, certified diamonds or not, I could promptly drive to the store and buy it myself!  Nice huh?

It’s not that my husband doesn’t like buying me jewellery – the problem actually is that in the past he enjoyed it too much and ended up spending too much money on items I thought were gaudy.

Yes, ladies, I actually made the error one Christmas morning of opening up a horrendous necklace and using that word to describe it.  Whoops.  I was always torn about this – he loved buying me pretty things, yet he spent too much and often on things I didn’t really like.  The frugal side of me was at war with the romantic side of me.  Do you accept the gift and wear it even though you don’t like it, or do you comment that it’s not your style and hopefully return it to get the money back before your husband decides to invest in wholesale diamonds while you’re not looking (I kid…maybe.)

In our case, my husband decided after that comment that he would no longer buy me jewellery and for 2.5 years now he has stuck to that promise!  In the beginning (and for the most part now) we joked about it since I didn’t think he could give up his love of spending money on pretty shiny things I surely didn’t need.  Now, I’m almost jonsing for something sparkly in a pretty box (did you know you can actually buy loose diamonds to replace those in settings you already have….just sayin’!) With our 10 year anniversary coming up, I wonder if he will give in and surprise me with jewellery or if I’ll be telling my grandchildren the Christmas morning story in 50 years?

P.S. For beautiful diamond jewellery, check out Brilliance.com – and then send the link to my husband…mmm kay?

  • Why don’t you send him links of jewelry that you like. He might find it easier to shop online anyway. Good luck 🙂

  • I know exactly what your talking about.. My Husband use to buy me stuff that was not only the wrong size, but stuff I really didn’t like. For example, a one piece white snow suit. He does however do okay on the Jewlery side. All though he hates buying it… “How many rings or necklaces can you where?”…lol So now that we have been married 32 years, the occasions for the bling happen on special occasions…lol

  • That is funny. I agree though, my husband can buy the wierdest stuff but then gets mad if he doesn’t see me wearing it all the time. But how do you tell him you don’t like what he bought. I agree with the other poster that it is best to show your husband what you like so they don’t waste money on things you don’t enjoy.

    Nice Blog!!
