Toy Story 3

Last night we settled in as a family to watch Toy Story 3 on Blu-ray, and I found out after posting my plans on Facebook that I wasn’t the only one with that bright idea for a Friday night in November.  With Toy Story 3 just being released on DVD and Blu-ray this past Tuesday (Nov 2nd), it’s no wonder that it was a top choice for families to watch this weekend.

I had heard a few things about this movie when it was in theater this summer – most notably that it was the best of the 3 Toy Story movies and also that it was sad and bittersweet.  Knowing that, I wondered what we would be in for!

The basic premise of the movie is that Andy is 17 and ready to leave for college.  Woody, Buzz Lightyear and the rest of the toys wonder what will become of them.  Will they end up in the attic?  Or worse yet, thrown away?  Through a series of mishaps (what would a movie be without a series of mishaps, right?) the toys end up in a box destined for Sunnyside Daycare.  The toys argue about whether this really is the best place for them to be, and Woody leaves the toys behind at the daycare as he was the only one initially chosen to go with Andy to college in the first place.

At first the daycare seems like the perfect place for the toys to be – the toy leader Lots-o-Huggin’ is welcoming and the toys think they will have a great time being loved by the many kids that pass through the daycare year to year.  However, everything is not as it seems at Sunnyside Daycare, and soon it’s up to Woody to help save the toys from a life very unlike what they had hoped for.

The end is definitely bittersweet and it nearly broke my heart when I heard a sniffle from the other couch and my 6 year old said, “Uh…I just have a runny nose mom,” in an effort to hide his tears.  It made me cry too!  We were crying for different reasons though – and as a mom you’ll understand the “mom” reason when you watch the movie.

Pick up Toy Story 3 in stores or online at places like Amazon.ca this holiday season for kids young and old.  Settle in and enjoy a movie night as a family – it’s a great story indeed.
