Fellowes Deskside Shredders

“Who would want to steal my identity, I’m a boring housewife!”  That’s the sentiment I always used when discussing identity theft with my husband (which he would always get annoyed at).  That is, until I had my wallet stolen and the idea of actually having someone steal my identity became very real.  Then it wasn’t so funny anymore.

Thankfully, I got my wallet and most of it’s contents back a few weeks later (the wallet was dropped off at a local police detachment, though the cash inside was gone, uh huh.)

Still, I was totally creeped out knowing that someone had access to my health cards and other identifying information and since then I’ve been a bit of a freakazoid about maintaining my private information.

So, when I had the opportunity to review a Fellowes Deskside Shredder for home use, I was thrilled!  Up until now, I had shred our bills and other documents into tiny pieces but admit to being lazy sometimes and only tearing a bill up a few times, then tossing it in the garbage hoping that the offending diaper beside it would keep criminals away (a  mommy security system of sorts!)

We keep our PS-12C Cross-Cut Shredder from Fellowes in our bedroom.  I’m paranoid about the kids not only hurting themselves with a shredder but also, let’s face it, shredding things that just should not be shredded!  This model comes with Patented SafeSense® Technology which actually stops the shredding when hands touch the paper opening, so parents can be assured that Fellowes thought of safety in the household.  Still, being that I don’t want any report cards shredded in the near future, the shredder remains in our room!

This model can shred up to 12 sheets at a time (all the bills at once, horray!) and isn’t super loud.  It’s one of those items that’s “nice to have” but you often don’t think to purchase for the household until it’s too late and you’ve had a scare.

After reviewing this item in our household, I thought to myself, “This would make a good gift for my parents”.  Seniors are not as vigilant or aware of identity theft as much as we are, and it’s scary thinking of the information they could unwillingly give out without realizing it.  I think a Fellowes Deskside Shredder would be a great gift for parents that are hard to buy for – this is something they will undoubtedly use and you will know you did something to keep them safe from identity theft!  Of course, it’s a great gift for anyone who is concerned about it, and realistically we all should be.  You can purchase the Fellowes PC 12C Cross-Cut Shredder at Office Depot for $129.99 US, and a similar model – the Fellowes DS 12C 12 Sheet Shredder can be purchased at Office Depot in Canada for $99.99 CDN.
