An article printed in the September 2010 issue of Canadian parenting magazine Today’s Parent was a wake up call for me.  Last year, my son (6) was diagnosed with asthma which took us by surprise.  We knew he would cough when he did excessive running but were surprised to learn that his asthma tests revealed he was well above the measurement line for diagnosing the disease.  Satisfied that we had everything under control for his mild asthma with his daily inhaler, I was oblivious to the danger he still faced until I read the article, “Hope for Children With Asthma”.  In the article, the author shares that of the roughly 20 children who die each year of asthma in Canada, about one-third are considered to have a mild case.  Whoa.

The article was a great resource of information and included tips like making sure your child’s asthma is under control (if the child is still having coughing/breathing issues or using their rescue puffer often, it is not under control).  The article also shares tips to help your child at home by eliminating environmental triggers as best we can.  Elijah’s room has laminate flooring with a throw-rug, and the kids are allowed 1 stuffed toy each (I simply can not make my son part with his beloved teddy).  I dust often and keep toys to a minimum in the room to reduce dust.  Then I discovered the Pure Zone Personal Air Filtration System and knew this was going to be a key component to helping to keep Elijah safe at night.

The PureZone Personal Air Filtration system, in basic terms, helps keep the air that surrounds you while you sleep clean and free of allergens and asthma triggers.  The filtration system is attached to a pillow case.  With the touch of a button, your  bedroom air enters the filtration system, the HEPA filter inside removes 99.97% of airborn allergens and pollutants, and the air then passes through the pillow case surrounding you with clean allergen-free breathing zone.

The PureZone Personal Air Filtration System is designed to fit in small spaces, so it doesn’t take up a lot of room at all.  We wondered how our 6 year old would feel about using this different pillow, but he was really excited to check it out.  We have been using this in our household for over 3 weeks now, and both my husband and I are really pleased with the results.  In 3 weeks, Elijah has only woken up once coughing at night and that was due in part to a virus going around school.  We both feel good knowing we’re giving him the purest sleeping environment we can, and he loves his new pillow.  The fan itself is quiet but also works as a great noise buffer and actually helps our 2 year old sleep more sound.  My husband often wakes up with a stuffy nose and itchy eyes, and he’d love to use this pillow for himself too but can’t since my 6 year old has dibs on it.  Here’s a quick video I made demonstrating the pillow and how quiet the fan is:
