The Upside to Moving

No, we’re not moving yet. Our house has been on the market since June 2009 when my husband accepted a transfer (in his line of work we move every 5 years on average) but here we sit. I’m hoping 2010 will bring us a buyer for our house so we can finally move out of the small town we live in to a bigger city (well, 17,000 or so which is much better than the small town population of 2600 where we currently live).

People ask if it’s hard moving so often. I don’t think so, at least not while my kids are young. Once they are older it will be hard for them to leave their friends and I’m not looking forward to that. Right now though, I enjoy the thought of purchasing a new house, renovating it to our liking, and of course finding shopping deals in the process. I’ve been caught by my husband already browsing in stores at the pretty new washing machines (I want front loading!) and refrigerators (freezer on the bottom, is it as useful as it looks?)

Having 7 months (so far) while waiting for our house to sell has given me plenty of time to compare shopping prices both in store and online, which I suppose is a bonus for frugal me. The best sales seem to be after the shopping season – we already purchased a new tv for the bedroom in our imaginary new house on Boxing Day (which in Canada is the big shopping day after Christmas Day…like the US’s Black Friday).

The best part of moving? Purging! Oh my gaawwwwd do I need to purge! Again, 7 months into this process has given me plenty of time. I was going to organize a garage sale for the spring (which is a great way for frugal mamas to make money and also find some great deals out there) but I’m thinking of just donating items to charity and friends who could use them. My own way of recycling (and saving my sanity not having to plan a garage sale!)

I hope our house sells soon. Winter is just not prime real estate time though. At this point, I’m pretty prepared to move already!
