Light Up Your Child’s Mind (closed)

Based on the renowned “Renzulli Method,” which has been adopted in schools all over the country, LIGHT UP YOUR CHILD’S MIND presents a practical program to help children fire up a love of learning to last a lifetime. World-renowned experts Drs. Renzulli and Reis illustrate the crucial role parents can play in their children’s development and address how they can work with teachers to enhance their children’s education. They uncover the hidden potential of daydreamers, rebels, and one-track minds, arguing that gifted behavior–basic smarts, high levels of task commitment, and creativity–can be fostered in bright children, even unmotivated ones.

The Renzulli method can help your child identify unique talents, build on personal strengths, acquire problem solving skills, achieve academic success, feel challenged and engaged and school, grow in self-confidence and develop a love of learning. Whew! That’s a pretty tall order for one book to cover.

I was attracted to this book because with my son entering school I was filled with a little apprehension – not because I thought he’d have trouble but moreso because I worried he would act out from boredom. I wondered what I could do, as a parent, to help foster his gift of reading and learning without pushing him (it’s such a fine line sometimes).

Though the subject matter is heavy, the book is an easy read. Divided into three parts: What is this Thing Called Giftedness, Practical Paths to Developing Your Child’s Gifts and Talents, and Special Considerations, this book can be tackled over a week or two with focus on each part.

In the first part, I was immediately drawn in when reading about the perceived negative characteristics or behaviors of creative or gifted individuals: daydreaming, questioning rules and authority, carelessness and disorganization and obsessiveness. Each characteristic had a real life example of a child who was able to turn the negative characteristic into a positive one with the help of his parents and teachers.

This book can appeal to all parents – it’s not just focused on how to enrich your gifted child (though the attention is paid here) but also how to nurture all children, get them to focus and enrich their minds at a crucial age. Involved parents make all the difference and we all know that – even if you take away just 1 thing from this book (I took away much more, many ideas and plans) you are further ahead than having not picked it up.
