Ah, the hockey mom. Up at the crack of dawn (sometimes before), hauling the kids to the rink, washing the team jerseys and putting in countless hours on the bench watching the kids play, learn, and grow on the ice. With three kids and living in Saskatchewan it’s kind of an oddity that I’m not a hockey mom. Hockey is king here on the prairies and I count several hockey moms among my friends.
The hockey mom closest to my heart is my sister, Kim. Her little guy (not so little anymore) started playing hockey at the age of 6 and now at 19 continues to play. That’s 13 years of being a hockey mom! The photo above was taken a few years ago at a Midget AAA hockey game for breast cancer awareness. The boys wore special jerseys and all the moms got the jerseys off their boy’s backs, right after the game! Yayyyyy, sweaty jerseys! See? More proof positive of the dedication of a hockey mom!
This week, P&G launched The House That Mom Built website where Canadians can celebrate minor league Hockey Moms, showing the carpool queen, the tournament manager, the official cheerleader and after-game snack maker how important they are by virtually raising their name in the rafters.
By visiting the page and filling in the name of a hockey mom you’d like to honor, you can help raise her name to the rafters like I did for my sister! You’ll receive an email that you can then forward to the deserving mom, and she can then download an image like this one, with her name proudly displayed, to her own Facebook timeline! Hurry, because the site is only live until April 13th!

I love, love, love being a hockey mom!!!!! I am so proud of my son! 🙂 I fondly remember those days many years ago when I had to go in the dressing room to tie up his skates. Of course, that was when the boys were young….and not so stinky!!!!! Then it made me a little sad when the coaches said “no parents” were allowed in the dressing room and they had to learn to tie their own skates. And there were many weekend hockey tournaments throughout the province – always a great “bonding time” for the parents. So much fun!! Now that my son is 19 years old and playing Junior B hockey in British Columbia – I am still an avid hockey mom cheering him on!
