This breakfast casserole has been a tradition on holidays and family gatherings for years. I didn’t realize it wasn’t as commonplace for most when I’d been asked about it several times over the last few weeks! So, I made it this weekend when we had guests over and snapped a pic for you, and an Instagram share of course!
Here’s the (very easy) recipe! Note that you have to prep everything the night before, but that makes the next morning super easy when you only need to add a topping or two and pop into the oven.
Wifesaver Breakfast Casserole
Ingredients
- 12-16 slices of bread, crusts removed
- 8-10 cheese slices
- 6-8 slices of ham
- 10 eggs
- 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp dry mustard
- 3 cups milk
- ½ cup onion
- ½ cup red or green pepper (or both!)
- ½ cup diced mushrooms
- salt/pepper to taste
- ½ cup butter or margarine, melted
- 1 cup cornflakes
Instructions
- Butter the bottom of a 9x13 baking dish
- Lay 6-8 slices of bread in the bottom of the dish
- Cover with a layer of ham
- Next, lay cheese slices on top of the ham
- Lay another 6-8 slices of bread on top of the cheese
- In a bowl, beat the eggs and add the Worcestershire sauce, dry mustard, milk, onion, peppers, mushrooms, and salt/pepper
- Pour liquid mixture over the casserole, cover and place in the fridge overnight
- In the morning, remove casserole from the fridge, melt ½ cup butter or margarine and pour over the casserole.
- Top with 1 cup cornflakes
- Bake, uncovered, in 350 degree oven for one hour
the idea of make ahead always appeals to me and when ever I see something like this I wish I liked eggs, but I don’t. we do pancakes. lately I’ve gotten into making them fun and easy by using a measure/shake/squeeze bottle that I found at dollarama and making them into holiday themed shapes. like Saturday I added a little green food colouring and made Christmas trees with a couple mini pancake presents to goo underneath it. then I pulled out the icing scribblers and put on some ornaments and a star on top. 2 weeks ago I made snowmen with little top hats and arms and used chippits as the eyes, nose, mouth and buttons.
I use a similar recipe for breakfast every Christmas…I think it is a recipe from my sister or a cookbook but it really is this easy!
My mom has been making her “Christmas Morning Wifesaver” for years – it’s sooo yummy! It almost makes me wish I still lived at home and woke up there Christmas morning 🙂 It’s hard to even get leftovers later on!
I do this, a breakfast schwartzies that I make way in advance and oven bacon. Serve with fruit and yogurt, very little actual prep on the day of!
This is such a great idea. I need to get my supplies ready so I can make this on Christmas morning. Thank you for the awesome recipe!

Never heard of a Breakfast Casserole – unfortunately I don’t really like bread cooked in a dish, and getting any ham locally that doesn’t have added nitrates is nearly impossible

This looks great! I love to make ‘oven pancakes’ for a travel recipe (e.g. before traveling). Also known as dutch pancakes. Cooks in one pan and uses up a lot of eggs, as well as some milk and butter.
This looks tasty! We don’t really have a special Christmas breakfast…
does look incredible…
I do a proper English breakfast that includes eggs, bacon, sausage, baked beans, toast and tomato slices. It’s heavy, but it’s delicious.
Looks delicious but I don’t like ham
Wow, does THAT look delicious!
Looks yummy, and I’ll have to try it soon!
Sounds like an interesting recipe… I don’t usually go big casseroles for breakfast as there are only two of us, but next time we have family over I will give this a try.

I might need to share this with my mother-in-law. She is looking for something easy and simple to serve Christmas morning. Thanks.

I may have to use my leftover turkey to make this
I love this recipe and have been making it for some time now.It comes out of the oven so golden and puffy and delicious looking.
If it were me, I would mix broken up corn flakes with melted butter and put that on top, it makes it so scrumptious that way.
