Do a search online about new year’s, post-holiday anything and you’ll likely find your results filled with links to articles, videos, and more on…losing weight after the holidays. It’s definitely a time of the year when we tend to cheat on our usual way of eating, make excuses for dessert before bed, and have second helpings because “it’s the holidays!” and that’s just what we do.
Hey, I do it too. And I don’t intend to stop anytime soon. I’m firm believer in not depriving ones self of the good things in life. Everything in moderation, as they say…and sometimes a little extra for good measure. The important thing to me is balance. Finding ways to eat healthier, while indulging here and there because – life is good.
Here are some great tips shared by Zannat Reza (Registered Dietitian) and Christine Cushing (TV Chef and Author) on ways we all can eat healthier during the holidays!
just don’t overindulge yourself, eat tiny portions through out the day so you don’t feel like your starving and end up eating to much
well this is a thing my youngest and I are going to try and do this holiay when out visiting our family. we are going to portion size stay away from sweets and fill up on veggie snacks when offered appetizers. we do plan on enjoying but all in moderation. fingers crossed we succeed.
its hard to eat right during the holidays
so much food during the holidays. i just have to remember not to over pack my plate and eat with my tummy not my eyes
moderation says it all; a bit now and a bit later is good
when the word ‘enough’ pops in your mind – its time to stop – spending, eating, etc
we try to eat right at christmas We may have a few extra cookies but over all we eat healthy enough 🙂
Eat smaller portions throughout the day.
I agree with their tip about adding more greens in the holiday meal
Eat in moderation ..if you need that sweet try a little bit don’t over indulge.
Eating in moderation is key
You used the key word “balance”, it is all about balance. Eat what you like but in moderation and balance, add a little exercise, just walking helps.
Eat, drink and be Merry, pick low salt/sugar alternatives, all are as good as the original recipe, and shovel snow to burn off the extra calories, you naturally burn a little more in the winter because its cold anyway
during the holidays its a very hard time to eat healthy , but i try not to over eat and not pick lol
use smaller plates! looks like more food.
I’m big on it all can happen – just moderation. Don’t deprive but don’t over indulge either!
I try to eat sensibly. I don’t give into temptation of eating too many sweets.
Portion control is the name of the game, try eating off a smaller plate.
Going for walks after eating always seems to help too. Some great advice!
I’m going to try to say No to the chocolate box as it’s passed around at Christmas.
I try to fill up on veggies and hummus. But I do not deprive myself of something I love to eat. I just take a smaller piece. And if I know I have a big party to attend and there is going to lots of great food, I try and fit in my exercises before going.
I try to eat light during the holidays and concentrate on the healthy foods.
Eat lighter for the meals that aren’t shared with others.
We do lots of activities during the holidays when everyone is around. That way you get some exercise and its lots of fun (like sledding, skating or just walking around and looking at people’s Christmas lights).
I am trying really hard not to over indulge this Christmas. I gained a few pounds in the fall and I would like to lose those.
My kids love fruit and veg, when given the choice would always pick the colourful stuff. I want to take their leads.
Keep exercising and don’t overdo the sweets,
I just try not to overindulge in anything but just take little tastes of whatever it is that I want to try. I also make sure to stay hydrated and avoid alcohol.
Eat the veggies
I don’t stress about the treats during holidays. I eat them moderately all year round so when Christmas comes there really is no binging on something I’ve deprived myself of for an entire year. I am not a drinker at all. I love my water & drink at least 3 glasses a day.. I don’t worry just about weight gain. But, Diabetes is heavy in my family as is high blood pressure,my brother had a heart attack at 36. ..
We try to avoid over-eating on the holiday.
Eat a portioned plate. Have a rest and eat dessert later.
I try not to eat after 6- and try to limit my sugar intake.
Use smaller plates, take less that you normally eat, fill up on salad and the fruits and veggies and less sweets
There are so many treats available during the holidays that it is easy to eat without thinking – it’s there so you pop it in your mouth. Mindful eating – choosing what you want most, having small helpings, enjoying the taste of each thing you eat – is so important.
Definitely don’t over do it… lots of water throughout the day helps too, and curbs hunger binges!
thanks for the video and great tips!
I agree! Do not deprive yourself during the holidays just eat anything you want but smaller portions. I like using the smaller plate trick to make it seem like their is more food than there is!

This will be the year we ingest more vegetabacons
I’m under-weight but I definitely need to be more heart healthy.
The key is balance. In everything. From eating, to exercise, stress…to play. :o)
