Released on April 22nd to coincide with the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, James Cameron’s Avatar is a feast for the eyes and food for deep thought about our society and the impact we are making on our environment, and our own spirits.
I missed seeing Avatar in theaters (living in a small town at the time, and with no babysitters to make a run to the city to see it in 3D) so I was eager for the DVD release. I received a complimentary copy of Avatar on Blu-ray to review and watched it with my husband one evening this week.
I can’t remember a recent movie that has captivated me so much, or caused as much discussion among my friends and family. Iroincally, the last movie I recall that had the same impact was another Cameron movie, Titanic (which I saw with my husband before we were even dating, actually..wow, a long time ago!)
While I have some friends who refuse to like any movie with this much hype, I find it difficult to find reasons not to like this movie. Yes, you have to allow yourself to believe in fantasy – it’s not every day that a man plugging his hair into that of mystical animal can have a result that takes your breath away, but the same people who scoff at the idea are fans of LOTR or Star Wars (neither of which interest me).
I suppose that is what impressed me the most – I didn’t expect to like a movie so heavily relying on fantasy and 3D special effects. In the end, it was the story, the heart of the movie, that pulled me in and made me a fan. If you’re holding out and still haven’t rented or purchased this movie, give it a chance.
