Now more than ever, families are finding new and innovative ways to make staying at home work for them, in a way that meets their needs and functionality, but that can also make life seem as normal as possible. Right now, in July 2020 here in Saskatchewan, restaurants are open and life is somewhat back to normal – for now – with cautious optimism and understanding that the potential for things to change quickly exists.
We’ve had the new Breville Combi Wave 3 in 1 in our household for several months now and have been able to use it and test out it’s versatility with everyone home, restaurants closed, and a hankering for our favourite meals and snacks. So what exactly *is* the Combi Wave? As Breville describes it, The Breville Combi Wave 3 in 1 is an innovative multi-tasker that integrates three popular counter top appliances – the microwave, the convection oven, and the air fryer – all into one machine.
So, you’ve got 3 appliances in 1, which is the basic and most efficient summary of the product but there’s so much more within. The functionality of the product helps make the $599 suggested retail price a little more palatable. Check it out:
Air fry for guilty-free family favourites such as French fries, and chicken wings. Higher temperatures combined with super convection (maximized air flow) deliver delicious, crispy golden air fried foods.
Element iQ® technology moves the power around the microwave to deliver precise cooking temperatures in the right place at the right time for perfect results
Fast Combi uses a combination of microwave and convection power to deliver more evenly cooked food in less time
The Frozen function is designed to perfectly cook different types of meat, from frozen to a perfectly cooked result by using microwave and convection power in different cooking stages.
Smart presets offer a selection of the most commonly used food types in cook, reheat and defrost modes.Time and power levels are automatically determined for optimum results.
Newly engineered and patented Soft Close door system.
Quieter operation is achieved via its 4thGeneration Inverter and optimised cooling fan and air flow system. Custom quiet ring tones designed for pleasant interaction.
Using the Combi Wave as a microwave was easy, and I suppose this function just makes it an easier way to integrate the product into your kitchen if you’re in need of space. A microwave does one thing: why give it a prized spot on your counter-top if you can find a product that microwaves food and has other functions as well – it makes sense.
So, my interest was in how the Breville Combi Wave would work as a convection oven and air fryer, and we had the most success and fun these past few months using the air fryer function – yes likely due to the fact that restaurants were closed and we were craving fried food!
Naturally, air fryer chicken wings were at the top of the list and we picked two family favorites to make in the Combi Wave – Buffalo Ranch and Lemon Pepper.
Next, we made home made egg rolls which were so good (our neighbor made them first in her more commonly known air fryer that I won’t share the name of here because they don’t send me products like Breville does, what can I say?) I liked them more than the chicken wings, and more than many restaurants, even. The reason being that I could customize what protein I used in them (we opted for ground pork the first time, chicken the second time) and of course, they’re not deep fried! All that was needed to achieve the crispy texture was a bit of oil sprayed on each roll before it went in the Combi Wave.
The Breville Combi Wave 3 in 1 can be found of course at Breville.ca, and depending on store openings in your area, you can also find it in store wherever Breville products are sold.
