My kids played an interesting game this past weekend. They, knowing that with dad working outside the house while I work from home, and often away working overtime out of town, realize that they come to mom for a lot of things all day every day, ohmygod all the things! So, they decided to see if they could – for one weekend – only ask dad questions and not go to me with everything on their minds. After a few hours Saturday morning they decided that they’d ask me only five questions a day and then the rest to dad. You see how this weekend was going already.
I love my kids, I love working from home, and I love that my husband works extra hard in a career he loves to provide for us. Still, I’m only human and there are days when I feel like one more question might break me. It’s the life of mom, right? So, as moms we look for ways to relax, give back to ourselves, and ensure that we take care of our own needs as well. Little things help; a glass of wine, a lunch date with a friend, a few hours at the salon to touch up those roots.
Just before school started, our family booked a staycation at a hotel here in Regina overnight. It was a chance to swim, hang out in the hot tub, enjoy breakfast I didn’t have to cook and a bed I didn’t have to make! We always bring along extra treats we don’t typically indulge in at home to really make it a carefree night (for mom too!)
With a busy fall and soon-to-be holiday season before us, the idea of a staycation is ever the more alluring for our family. Sometimes we all just need a break from it all, an evening away from the kitchen and chores to just have fun and connect again. Staycations are the perfect way to do this – in our case we can have a little holiday away and not even have to worry about a dog kennel for our labradoodle – my husband typically sneaks away once the kids are asleep to tend to the dog at home and get some shut-eye before he heads to work.

I have 2 Holiday Inn hotels and 1 Holiday Inn Express Suites in my area but I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express Suites in St. Catharine’s, Ontario last fall while I had some renovations done and the suite I stayed in was beautiful and best of all it was completely wheelchair accessible which is what I need because I’m disabled. It had a full new kitchenette and a beautiful new bathroom with wheel in shower. Long story short, if I could afford it I would live there.
