The lazy hazy days of summer are gone, moms, and now it’s time to get down to business and start off the year right with an organizational plan for the household. I still love websites like FlyLady.net – it’s a great resource for all things organizational in the home but I have personally decided the site is for overachievers (and I…am not.) One of the beginner baby steps on the site is to shine your sink daily and I have failed miserably at that one!
Here are my basic tips for keeping an organized home. There’s no extravagant program to follow here (and if your sink has water spots all over it, celebrate how colorful it looks and continue on with your day!)
Prepare As Much As You Can The Night Before
– Sign forms (write cheques!!), read or re-read newsletters to make sure you’re not forgetting to bring 24 cupcakes on Monday, finish up book orders and put completed homework in the backpack before turning in for the night.
– Lay out clothes for the following morning, including socks. If your little fashionista wants to pick out her own clothes, the evening is a much better time to have clothing battle discussions. Obviously this only works up to a certain age, after that point may the force (and not MTV) be with you, moms.
– Prepare lunches the night before, if possible. If you’re like me and get icked out at refrigerated sandwiches, place all non-perishable items in the lunch kit the night before, cut up fruit/veggies and put them in storage containers, etc.
Getting Out the Door
The biggest stress in the morning is ensuring we actually get out the door on time, and the reason we don’t succeed is because someone is often looking for their backpack/hat/shoes/jacket/mittens or any number of things that suddenly have gone
missing in the past 12 hours.
We headed out to The Home Depot this summer in search of something to help, and I found two items that are definitely going to make my mornings easier!
A basic Cube Shelf like this one (at The Home Depot Canada in store for $44.98) with the basket inserts ($7.77) is perfect for storing lunch kits, mittens, hats, notes and more near the door.
Next, this bench is perfection! With even more space for shoes and backpacks, plus a place to sit instead of in-the- middle-of- the-floor- while-I- trip, this helps keep mom and kids happy (and safe!)
Heads up! Now through until October 31st, RBC Rewards credit card clients who shop at The Home Depot Canada will earn 2X RBC Rewards points on every $1 in purchases (whether in-store or online) when you use your RBC Rewards credit card to pay. This program is only available to shoppers in Alberta and Saskatchewan so it’s the perfect opportunity to get some organizational products for your household AND earn two times the RBC Rewards points (perhaps for a sunny destination vacay this winter?)
What about you? If you have an organizational tip to share, please do! In the meantime, I wish you calm mornings, expertly prepared lunches, and the satisfaction of getting out the door on time this back to school season.
If you’re an RBC client in Alberta or Saskatchewan, definitely take advantage of the 2x RBC Rewards Points offer before October 31st!
Looking for more tips? I shared them at Global Regina Morning News here:

First thing on the list is reorganizing all of my kitchen cupboards.

everything is everywhere and using up all my counter space for meal prep!
My daughter starts going to Playschool twice a week in two weeks so right now we in organizing mode right now
everything needs a place, in order to stay organized, I use baskets and containers and I know exactly where everything is at all times, unless of course someone moves it from that spot lol. thanks for the giveaway and chance to win
Front doors are usually steel. Ours is. I have a small magnetic white board (8 x10) on the inside of the door so we can write ourselves reminders the night before and check on our way out. I also use a magnetic pencil holder (like the ones you see for lockers) which holds the coloured dry erase markers and eraser. I also found magnets with just the names of the days of the week so we can add it to the board and this way we know which day each reminder/note was written for.
I have to reorganize some things like containers and my fridge drawer changes to a kid snack drawer.. Also bought a colored shelf to store papers for each day of the week.
By having designated spots for backpacks and shoes.
We are purging toys and baby clothes and kids clothes right now to begin to feel organized again!
Getting clothes set out before bed is the lifesaver in our house!
I will be reorganizing my storage room.
I use lots of bins, baskets and containers for everything here. 😀 Thanks!
Getting the home organized now that school is back in by putting hooks up for bags and clearing off the desk.
I am throwing out any unnecessary things that cause clutter. I hate clutter.
Built a bench with individual lockers in our mudroom. Perfect place for all the kids stuff.
Every room needs sprucing up but I have designated September for the bedroom. I’ve been looking at storage options on Home Depot onine, also a cute rocking chair.
I gathered up all the extra school items/supplies I had left over and lots of household goodies and held a garage sale last weekend.
I do not have kids in school anymore but I still like to get organized after being more laid back during the summer. I like to get our summer clothes out of the way and bring out the fall wardrobe. I also like to just do general organization throughout the house which falls by the wayside during the summer.
I always tackle closets in the fall! Time to put away summer things and a good time to organize clothes, shoes, etc.
We are going through all the toys and reorganizing the entire downstairs.
I have been going through cupboards and closets getting rid of stuff we don’t want or need any longer. We seem to gather so much through the year and now with the holidays creeping up, we will have more so its re-organize and get rid of things time in our house.
I am totally getting into organizing mode now that school is back in!! I still have one child at home, but I am still able to get so much more done with my extra free time – we had so much fun doing lots of activities this summer, the house was kind of neglected… I have started by cleaning out the kitchen cupboards and getting rid of food we won’t be eating – making space for all the snacks etc we need for school. I like to have organized cupboards where we can easily find stuff to pack lunch bags with, both in regards to both the food and the containers. I’ve also culled my kids’ clothing to make space for any new items we will need to replace the things that are outgrown. Next was our entry way – got rid of all the summer clutter and cleared up the space for the backpacks, school shoes, coats etc so that we can just pick up and go in the mornings. That’s where I’ve made progress so far, but I’m just getting started!
I’ve been going through clothes and toys. Stuff I want to donate and stuff I want to keep. The keep stuff have been put into totes. And I’ve been getting ready to take out the fall clothes and put away the summer. However summer seems to be sticking around for a while.
I am slowly starting to pack up some summer items in their storage containers to make room for school items and sports gear.
I’m organizing kiddo’s clothes by size so that I know which clothes fit him, and then i choose his outfit each night so am not taking time to do so in the busy mornings.
we need to add more cabinets and shelves in our place
My daughter starts school Monday (JK) and I am very excited 🙂 That means mommy can get some things done around the house. First thing I would like to do is reorganized my bathroom cabinets and then paint my powder room
I have no one in school anymore, but when my girls were in school I would organize the livingroom and put everything back and clean the cupboards and do inventory on the contents, and give the bathroom a major cleaning!!
Good time of the year to get organized! !
We’ve overhauled the kitchen cupboards and we have to get our entrance way more organized so everything has it’s own home.
Freezer stocked with easy to grab snacks for the kids! With crazy schedule, crock pot meals and pre made freezer meals makes life way less hectic! Also have hooks and baskets in the boot room
Been reorganizing her closet, and there’s alot to organize in there lol
I would like to organize the front hall way. I want a place where the kids can place their shoes, backpacks and lunch bags together. They tend to just throw things by the door the minute they walk in.
We are trying to slowly but surely get our garage back to a really organized state as I admit…it is out of hand! :/
Oops…dismiss my few entries! Just realized this is only for Canada–I am in the U.S.! #oops! 😉
I have been sorting through closets and gathering clothes/accessories to sell and donate.
I need to organize the closets they are a mess! I am thinking a couple closet organizing systems might be a good plan & lots of containers. Now I just need to get the motivation to tackle it!
We are redoing our front and back entryways. We are painting and adding more hooks , cubbies and shelves in an attempt to tame the mess and stop losing things.
I am cleaning the kids’ rooms and getting rid of all the stuff they stashed all summer.
My children are grown so my organizing is to make things easier for the two of us. I have a bedroom that still has some of my grown kids belongings that they left when they moved out and got married. I have been boxing up these things for them to go through. Once that room is done I will have a nice craft room. I would like to put some kind of a shelving system in there to store craft supplies in.
went through closets and drawers and moved out the summer clothes/items and put in school clothes, made a spot/area for the backpack/umbrella/footwear near the door. The rest of the house will get reorganized in weeks to come..especially kitchen cupboard!
Going through the clothes and getting the fall and winter ones out, also getting our house ready for winter, by getting some firewood, ect…
Back to school doesn’t happen yet in our household but I will gladly accept other’s tips for the day that it does start 😉
For me it’s making sure I’ve got good, healthy food ready. In cooler months the fresh veggies and fruit aren’t hanging on the counter as much. So planning that in advance and staying organized so I don’t over buy is important. Also, dollar store baskets. I have them on top of every hallway closet. Makes it was easier to pull things down without everything falling on your head.
re-organizing their closets (donating clothes that are too small, etc) and emptying out the cupboards by the front door so we can put their shoes, boots and jackets there
I am very particular. With a busy lifestyle everything needs to be organized and in its own spot. I declutter all the time and sell or donate what we don’t use.
I’ve sorted and purged the kids clothes and cleaned out the fridge and freezers.
I’ve got a new storage unit in our living/dining area, and need to unpack some of the boxes from our storage locker.

This weekend I’m tackling my closet to get ready for the change in seasons.
Front hall closet purge is in full effect. Amazing how much seemingly random stuff builds up in there over the course of a summer.
I am slowly filling my car trunk with items set for the donation box. I am concentrating more on finishing the basement which I thought would have been completed years ago.
Getting my home organized is a year-round, every day process for me! With school back in I need to start changing over my kids’ wardrobe from summer to fall, organizing the pantry, and doing a BIG clean for all the bathrooms and windows! It never ends- but this would surely help! Thank you for the chance!
Bookshelves and lots of them. We’re also trying to organize our kitchen a bit better so it’s easier to grab and go!
I pack lunch & lay out tomorrow’s clothes, etc. the night before so that we’re not rushing around in the morning.
I’m going through all my cupboards and getting them organized by donating what I don’t need and tidying up the rest.

I’ve always believed that getting your clothes out and making the lunches the night before helps keep you organized and saves a lot of time in the morning. I also think a calendar/schedule is another way to keep your life organized and never miss an appointment
My kids are only 3 and 4 months old, so no school for us this year. We stay organised for daycare by preparing all my daughter needs the night before. We empty the dirty clothes of the bag if necessary and put new ones in. We look at meteo to pick the clothes for tomorrow and sometimes I prepare what we will need for breakfast or matching accessories like a headband. I prepare all my clothes and the baby’s ones too.

I am trying to organize a better space for the kids to be able to do their homework. Provide a better lighting situation and have some thought into how the area should function. The space is horrible right now. Not to mention I was using it for scrapbooking whether leaves it kind of messy.

my sister has her kids organized by each having their own drawer in the closet, and they each get one toque and one set of mittens. If you loose them, go find them. Now that school is back in we have taken several steps to get organized. There is a place for everything from the moment we get in the door and a routine. Shoes & coats go away, hats & umbrellas, keys in the same place every day, place for the backpack and lunch kit. We’ve prepared a comfortable area for doing homework and another area for reading. Water bottle and reusable containers have a readily available spot. Even school snacks have their spaces in the cupboard and refrigerator. Sunscreen at the ready with the morning routine and vitamins. Still…I would welcome a gift certificate to incorporate things to make everything more aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Not everything has to be out in the open and visible.
There is a peg for backpacks and coats and a rack for shoes.
Getting the cold weather clothes out of storage and cleaning out the closets
I went through all my kids closets to donate all the items they no longer fit before bringing anything new into the house again.

Last winter I vowed to have ALL spaces free of clutter at the same time & so far I have failed. My fav de-cluttering style is to clean off one surface (desk, table, counter) & pile everything without a home on a different surface or on the floor or desk in the back bedroom. I just started again today & I’m hoping I can manage this time, I just have my hubby’s dresser & the entire back room to go through. Then I can start on the basement. lol
Closet organization is the biggest thing I’ve been working on to stay organized with back to school.

Reorganizing the kids clothes closets and sports gear
Now that school has started, I am finally putting up the shelves in the apartment.
At the end of the school year, it’s a bit frantic to try and sort through art and school projects that have been brought home. I find that it’s good to go through these items about a week before school starts so, we can have a bit of ‘review’ of the past year, and share our thoughts/goals for the new academic year. I also go through the kitchen cupboards; sift through lunch containers and the snack cupboard and both of our dressers. I find that this helps my child and I prepare for the new school year; both physically and mentally.
