Just Say Yes.

While Meghan Trainor  is singing “No” on the radio oh so well today I’m talking about all the yes! Have you ever tried that philosophy, either on a special outing with the kids, or as a new approach to work and experiences? It’s amazing what can happen if you stop yourself from your initial snap reaction of “no” and instead embrace the “yes” a little bit more.

Case in point – recently my friend (and amazing photographer) Michelle, ahem Ms. Richter, asked if I’d come and speak to her grade 8 English class about what I do. The students have been studying writing, of course, but in the same manner I asked my algebra teacher in high school, “where am I actually going to use this?” the students were curious on how their fluency in the written word, and for some an absolute love of writing, can help them later in life.

Wondering what I could possibly say to encourage them to embrace writing more, in 8th grade, I debated if I should do it. In the end, I decided it might be fun to share the evolution of how I became a mommy blogger, radio personality, and morning news regular over the past 8 years.

I wondered if we could find a way to engage the students further into what I do. Happily, my friends at P&G were ready to help. As a PG Mom since 2012 I’ve worked with many Proctor & Gamble brands and use them in my household every day. What better way to share how I review products on the blog than with a P&G brand product!

swiffer class review

Yup, I shared a Swiffer Duster with each member of the class (do you see me in the picture? It’s because I blend in and look young too right?) Back to the Swiffer… I shared with the class how my writing and reviews have grown since 2008 and the basic process on how I write a review. I didn’t realize there was a bit of a formula until I was asked about the layout. The students were able to ask questions about what I do, and I was able to share my own tips for improving their writing and growing their online presence should they choose to look at a hobby, job, or career online.

Each student, for their class assignment with Ms. Richter, was asked to take home the Swiffer Duster and review it within their own household. Maybe they would be able to, as Swiffer is suggesting in their latest campaign, say Yes To The Mess, or maybe they would find a unique way Swiffer could help keep their rooms clean (which in turn makes for happy moms, right?) They then posted their reviews to their own online blogs – yes each student has their own blog for the class (ask me how much I love this!) I was given a sneak peak at the blogs and here are a few quotes from the student’s reviews:

Swiffer1

Using the Swiffer Duster made cleaning my shelves and TV stand so much easier than it was before. It eliminates the need to bend over backwards to get those hard to reach spots. Although it was quite awkward for my family to walk in on me dancing and dusting, the Swiffer Duster doesn’t embody any deficiencies within it’s performance that deems it ineffective at all. The Swiffer Duster is the go-to item if you want that effortless, and effective performance. – Jerico

Swiffer’s thousands of fluffy microfibers had locked dust in its place! Lastly, it was time to put the shake of the duster to the test, I shook the duster vigorously waiting to see a speck of dust come free, not one flew away. This blessing from the cleaning gods had made this a product to jump with glee over! A definite buy!  – Sadie

As I wandered through the house searching for areas filled with dust bunnies, I wasn’t dreading dusting as much as I thought I would be.  The cleaning process was easy and is completely safe for young kids to help clean around the house. When I used the Swiffer everything I dusted looked sharp and shiny.  Next time my parents make me clean the Swiffer will definitely be the first item I grab.  I recommend the Swiffer duster 360 for anyone who wants to make shining up their house an easy job.  I give the Swiffer a 4.5/5. – Sam

There are many benefits to the Swiffer 360 Duster.  First of all, the packaging is easy to open without any tools.  The duster comes in three parts, a fork-like handle and two fluff dusters.  The handle simply slides into the duster.  It’s ready to use!  You don’t need any water or other supplies to make your house clean from dust.  The Swiffer 360 Duster really does ‘trap and lock dust from even the tight spaces in your home’.   – Gwyneth

The company  promised the Swiffer picks up dust and locks it away with thousands of flexible fluffy fibers, lightly coated with dust lock adhesive. These fibers change shape to reach into nooks and crannies, trapping up to 2x more dust than a dry dust cloth for a high-definition clean.  I think that their promise is true.  I used it to clean the ceiling fan, the t.v. and the blinds. It cleaned so well the Swiffer was not white and yellow,  it was gray and black. The Swiffer seemed to clean fast and did a pretty good job so I was happy. – Tristan

Overall, the students enjoyed trying the product and truly putting it to the test. Did they have some concerns? Definitely (not all products are perfect 100% of the time). Some had trouble making the Swiffer Duster stay on the cleaning wand, and Tristan’s mom had concerns on the environmental impact of disposable duster cloths. It’s wonderful to see these students taking a critical look at the products they use every day, which in turn hopefully plays into family discussions on finances and shopping (and yes, cleaning too!)

I had a great time visiting the class on a rainy spring morning and sharing a bit about what I do. Reading their reviews took me back to 8th grade (wasn’t it just a few years ago?) and back to my very favorite English class in high school. Of course I had no clue I would be doing what I do today, and I honestly couldn’t tell you where I’ll be in 5 years. What I do know is that saying “yes” more often is leading to a lot of very good things in my life.

Swiffer’s Yes To The Mess messaging embraces the fun of a mess, knowing they have the products to take care of it after. Two entirely different ways to look at yes, of course, but with a mutual tie-in of goodness and fun. Swiffer is sharing the fun with my readers too – you have the opportunity to win a Swiffer prize package for your Yes To The Mess moments!
