Fabulous Frugal Finds

A Frugal Dinner? Easy With #WalmartFRESH

The cost of living is rising, and as a result it’s becoming more difficult for many families to eat healthy on a budget.  According to Food Banks Canada’s Annual HungerCount report, food bank use increased in 6 out of 10 provinces this year.   Roughly 37% of Food Bank users are children, and nearly half of households that use food banks are families with children. Saskatchewan had the biggest increase since 2013, at 19.4 per cent.  I’m so thankful that we have food banks for families to ensure they are eating well, though I hazard to guess that many Canadian families are finding it difficult to make ends meet and buy ingredients for fulfilling, healthy, meals on a budget.  It may not mean a family is ready to access the food bank but they certainly have difficultly with every day necessities – this is unfortunately becoming more common.

So, what’s a family to do?  I always recommend using coupons, only buying household items on sale, and watching flyers for discounts and deals.  When shopping for groceries, look for retailers that promise you low prices and deliver consistently.

#walmartfreshWalmart Canada, with their Save Money.  Live Better. slogan is certainly one of those retailers.  Now, with fresh grocery options on the shelves, Canadians have a one-stop shop for household items and groceries.  Have you purchased your weekly protein from Walmart? I will often pick up 100% Fresh Canadian Angus beef, Farm Raised and Air Chilled poultry, or Farm Raised pork at Walmart.  The prices typically can’t be beat!  Still, purchasing the items is one thing – creating meals for the family without breaking the budget is another.

I followed the suggestion in the recipe to substitute soy sauce for Sriracha sauce on our kid’s portion and everyone was happy with the result!  Check the link above for the recipe – it turned out really well and I love how inexpensive and easy this meal was to whip up!  Follow the #WalmartFRESH hashtag on Twitter for more posts and recipe reviews!
