The cost of living is rising, and as a result it’s becoming more difficult for many families to eat healthy on a budget. According to Food Banks Canada’s Annual HungerCount report, food bank use increased in 6 out of 10 provinces this year. Roughly 37% of Food Bank users are children, and nearly half of households that use food banks are families with children. Saskatchewan had the biggest increase since 2013, at 19.4 per cent. I’m so thankful that we have food banks for families to ensure they are eating well, though I hazard to guess that many Canadian families are finding it difficult to make ends meet and buy ingredients for fulfilling, healthy, meals on a budget. It may not mean a family is ready to access the food bank but they certainly have difficultly with every day necessities – this is unfortunately becoming more common.
So, what’s a family to do? I always recommend using coupons, only buying household items on sale, and watching flyers for discounts and deals. When shopping for groceries, look for retailers that promise you low prices and deliver consistently.
Walmart Canada, with their Save Money. Live Better. slogan is certainly one of those retailers. Now, with fresh grocery options on the shelves, Canadians have a one-stop shop for household items and groceries. Have you purchased your weekly protein from Walmart? I will often pick up 100% Fresh Canadian Angus beef, Farm Raised and Air Chilled poultry, or Farm Raised pork at Walmart. The prices typically can’t be beat! Still, purchasing the items is one thing – creating meals for the family without breaking the budget is another.
That’s why I’m thrilled to share that the Recipe Centre at Walmart.ca not only features a fantastic assortment of protein rich recipes but also details exactly how much per portion the recipe will cost you. This is so great for budgeting and an easy way to see how you can cut your weekly grocery spending by shopping smart. For example, this week I found a delicious recipe for Crispy Spicy Peanut Chicken that worked out to an estimated cost of $3.25 per serving!
I followed the suggestion in the recipe to substitute soy sauce for Sriracha sauce on our kid’s portion and everyone was happy with the result! Check the link above for the recipe – it turned out really well and I love how inexpensive and easy this meal was to whip up! Looks good! I typically never buy my groceriesfrom Walmart(we shop Costco) but since our move weve tried Walmart. Saves us a few bucks here and there.
I don’t buy my groceries from Walmart as it is too far away and we never eat chicken, I would probably use either fish or cheese to be coated

For some reason I am weirded out by buying fresh meat at walmart, I think its because you don’t see a fresh butcher like in most grocery stores. This looks delicious though!

Good to know! Thanks for the info!!
That looks great!
I always use coupons when I can, I watch for sales also, our extra foods we can get quite a lot of bakery items 1/2 price and same with meats they reduce them to 30%, I have noticed in my town way more seniors are shopping for reduced items only, our town is over priced due to being an oil field town so the little people get hit hard.
Looks so delicious…I want to come over for dinner!!!
So different and looks delicious

Looks like something I can try.
Great recipe and tips on how to cut costs when grocery shopping. The cost of food has certainly risen faster than wages and I appreciate the article so much!
This is a dish that my entire family would love! We do most if not all of our grocery shopping at Walmart!
That’s a great price per serving and this is something I think my whole family would eat, which doesn’t always happen.
I love calculating how much a meal I’ve made has cost…it’s good to remind myself of how much cheaper it is to eat (and eat good!) at home compared to even eating at a cheap fast food place.
Ramen noodles? Genius!! I am going to try this out.
