OWL Magazine Unveils New Look Featuring Chris Hadfield as Guest Editor

OWL September CoverThe September 2014 issue of OWL—Canada’s leading magazine for children ages 9 to 13—features a fresh new look with exciting new content and design updates.

As it did in 1976 when first launched, OWL continues to give children access to new information in a fun, age-appropriate and engaging way. The magazine’s relaunch uses the principles of the STEAM movement to continue that tradition, helping bring the magazine’s motto: discover, explore, engage, and inspire to life. Commander Chris Hadfield also helps celebrate this new era for OWL by serving as special guest editor for the “Out-of-This-World” September issue, on

“STEAM is an educational approach to learning that uses Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics to help teach and inspire students,” explains Jennifer Canham, Group Publisher, Owlkids. “Innovation is driving the future, and by using STEAM to develop our content we’re encouraging our readers to learn through creation and discovery.”

The new OWL Magazine features editorial content that leverages the concepts of STEAM, and unveils new design updates, including a refreshed logo and new mascot. In the September issue, former Commander Chris Hadfield serves as guest editor and takes readers on a special space journey. OWL also introduces its Advisory Board, a group of experts who will contribute to the magazine over the coming year.

This board includes Dr. Jennifer Gardy (BC Centre for Disease Control), Jonathan Moneta (MAKELAB), Ziya Tong (Daily Planet co-host) and Raymond Wang (Canadian Young Scientist Journal).

“We’re honoured to have Commander Hadfield serve as guest editor of the issue officially launching our redesign,” says Kim Cooper, Editor, OWL Magazine. “The new-and-improved OWL will offer our readers a fun mix of their favourite sections, while introducing some new features and a
great contest that is out-of-this-world!”

Complementing the relaunch issue’s space theme is OWL’s exciting OUT-OF-THIS-WORLD CONTEST. This national promotion will invite Canadian families to enter for the chance to win their very own space adventure to Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in Florida.
