Oh My Yum!

Maple French Toast bagelsWe have been in a bit of a celebratory mood in our household for almost a month now.

The focus of our celebrations?  Peanut butter.  Creamy, nutty and delicious peanut butter!

You see, our house has been peanut free for over 5 years now, shortly after daughter was diagnosed with a peanut (and tree nut) allergy after her first birthday, quite by surprise.  In the course of testing for other allergies, we discovered the peanut one.  Our world changed a lot that day, though to keep it in perspective we realize a food allergy isn’t a horrible diagnosis and we count ourselves lucky that it was the most we had to deal with.

We just had to adjust.

My son (4 at the time) gave up his peanut butter sandwiches and cookies and my husband and I gave up our favorite peanut butter and bananas on toast.  We kept a watchful eye during holidays for chocolates and baking and hoped that one day we could have peanut butter again in our household.

That day arrived on March 21st when Nevaeh, now 6, did what’s referred to as a peanut challenge with her Pediatric Allergist in Saskatoon right at the hospital.  With all emergency equipment available nearby, the doctor administered one spoonful of peanut butter every 15 minutes over the course of an hour and we then waited and watched for a reaction.  After spending a few hours at the hospital that day we were elated that she passed with no reaction and was declared peanut-allergy free that day!

But it did.

Demp_RD_Bagels_3d_Front_FrenchToastMonths ago I discovered new Dempster’s Maple French Toast Bagels and decided try my old favorite on bagels instead of toast.

And Oh My Yum was the result!

This is the new breakfast you need to try. Like, now.  And then again tomorrow.  And then hide the Maple French Toast bagels from the kids because you don’t want them to eat them all.

Wait, what? Who? No, I wouldn’t do that!

  • Congrats! Can’t imagine life without peanut butter. My husband is a diabetic and peanut butter is one of the foods he can eat and enjoy. That peanut butter and banana on that bagel looks delicious.

  • I bought a new jar of peanut butter over the weekend…it was at a price that I had never seen before…just finished stirring it in preparation for an awesome breakfast that looks just like this!

  • Those bagels are so yummy and yay to no peanut allergy. I would be so sad if we had one here.

  • Yay! My youngest (8 months) has a milk protein allergy. It had certainly been an adjustment. I how one day we can celebrate a similar result!

  • YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY! OMG Congrats!! so inspiring!! My toddler was diagnosed at 20m with peanut allergy and the allergist said with any luck he may outgrow it by the time he’s a teen!
We LOVE PB, I have older kids who grew up with PB and it was devastating when we had to clear the house and watch labels with the toddler. it was a huge adjustment.
You’ve given me hope that our home too may one day see peanut butter again!
    Thank you
    Congrats!!

  • that is awesome exciting news!!! we love peanut butter in this house and I can only imagine how it must have been having to avoid it!!

  • That’s great news!! We are hoping the same for us. Our oldest was told she is allergic to peanuts and since has an epipen wherever she goes. Although she’s never had a reaction her blood count was too high to do the food challenge. I’m hoping in a few years she can be tested again…so many thing have nuts in them.

  • Woah I didn’t even know that it was possible to get diagnosed and then it change! That is so awesome!!! I can’t imagine living without peanut butter!

  • Woohoo!!! This is super awesome! So happy for her! Made me think on this; maybe I’ll have to try the same testing in regards to my almond/hazelnut allergies…I sure miss Nutella! Happy Peanut Butter eating 🙂

  • so was the allergy at first a false positive? I had false ones on fish and chicken when I was tested.

  • Amazing! I have never heard of the challenge, that’s great everyone can enjoy peanut butter again.

  • WooHoo, I am so happy for you as we too are huge fans of Peanut butter. But I sure didn’t know about these bagels until you mentioned them. We have maple bacon, sausage, you mane it, has to be maple flavored. I’ll be looking for these now

  • horray!!!! that is awesome! we’re hoping my son outgrows his allergy to corn! like peanuts its in everything! enjoy a reeses!!!

  • That’s very exciting news, just in time for an Easter Egg Hunt (Reece’s are my favorite!)

  • What a relief that must have been! I can only imagine the fear of sending your child out into the world of birthday parties and school snacks with an allergy!

  • What a relief to not have to worry about hidden nut products in food – HOORAY!!

  • That’s so awesome. I know a lot of children can’t even be near to even see, smell, or be in the vicinity of a peanut better jar opening or else they go into severe Anaphylaxis. Congrats for you and yours 🙂

  • What great news for your daughter and family plus to be able to indulge in PB and banana again sounds like heaven.

  • Congrats on the peanut-allergy-freedom! (if that’s a word lol) My brother is highly allergic to peanuts….I wonder if he ever thought of getting this done. I’ll have to tell him!

  • I have some of those bagels, but never thought of putting peanut butter on them. Guess what I am trying in the morning?

  • What a celebration! I can’t believe the allergy went away! My hubby is allergic, I’d love to be able to celebrate this in out house!!

  • It must be great to be able to have Peanut Butter again, I cannot imagine our house peanut free as my husband takes peanut butter sandwiches to work everyday!

  • I’m so happy for you. Not having to constantly read labels etc. will make life much simpler.

  • I’m so very happy to hear of stories like this (and just a little bit jealous!) I hope our day comes when my DD outgrows her peanut allergy!

  • That is great news for you and your family. The banana’s and peanut butter sound like a great mix

  • that’s great news. I’m lucky that both my kids are healthy and don’t have any known allergies. I couldn’t imagine giving up peanut butter (but would do so for my kids if I had to.)

I am glad she wont have to be so careful about watching out for peanuts in the future. and that you wont have to worry about her being exposed to her past allergy at social events or anywhere out in public.

  • Congratulations! My little guy has a peanut allergy. We are hopeful he’ll eventually have the same outcome!

  • This is a new flavour!! I would love to try these…I love maple flavoured…anything!

  • That’s awesome! We go through about 2 jars of peanut butter a week, so it would be a big change if one of our kids developed peanut allergies.

  • That’s fantastic for your family. Now if they could only discover why this is such a prevalent allergy, when it was unheard of 30 years ago.

  • Aww, that is so awesome!!! I can’t imagine having to totally eliminate foods with nuts. My son had a dairy allergy when I was nursing him, and just eliminating dairy was so hard!

  • Wow, I never knew that it could change , how nice is that not to be to have to go without peanuts!

  • What a life changing process – great success and relief. Congratulations to you and your family!

  • Congratulations!!! how awesome to have pb&j again! that bread Dempster’s Maple French Toast Bagels sounds delicious!

  • How exciting that she is peanut allergy free now! one less precaution to worry about! Would love to see if they sell that bagel in my grocer!

  • Wow, how lucky and wonderful for your family! What a relief you all must feel. My niece almost died from her peanut allergy when she was a baby (none of us knew she was allergic until that awful day), and unfortunately at further testing it turns out her allergy is even more severe than before – she basically has the highest level of allergy to nuts, and could go into anaphylactic shock even from inhaling dust from the nuts! I am always so nervous about everything I give her, and triple check labels whenever my sister is not with me to confirm whether or not something is safe. Like you said, there are definitely worse things that kids can be diagnosed with, but still it would be such a relief to not have to worry about a potentially life-threatening allergy. Congratulations, such great news for your family! 🙂

  • It’s amazing how kids can grow out of allergies 🙂 Growing into allergies is no fun lol we miss our peanut butter and pb cookies. But that is great news all around and those bagels sound so yummy.

  • Great news!! 23 years ago I was diagnosed with my peanut allergy. So happy to hear your daughter is peanut allergy free!

  • Allergies really hold us back from certain things.. and they’re annoying too! So this is amazing! Great news! Yay!

  • that’s great, what a relief that must be… and we love these new bagels they are yummy

  • I just bought Maple French Toast Bagels a couple of days ago and was trying to figure out what to do with them 🙂 Thanks for the idea!

  • That is great news. These bagels look amazing, I will have to give them a try

  • I’m glad your daughter no longer has the peanut allergy. That would make me nervous all the time if I had to deal with that!
