Books Are Like a Box of Chocolates – You Never Know What You’re Gonna Get:

geographyBy Tara Richter…

I am like a little kid in a candy shop when it comes to books. I could spend an entire day in a bookstore browsing through hundreds of titles – discovering tiny nuggets of information from each and every book. It is one of the reasons I love the books by DK Canada, who publish highly visual, photographic non-fiction for adults and children. All of the books published by DK provide great written reference content, alongside vibrant and captivating images and photos.

I immediately ventured into the Earthly Pleasures Boutique (I’m a bit of a science nerd) to browse the dozens of titles relating to everything about “earth”. I love gardening, nature, animals and anything related to understanding more about this amazing planet. Since I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Geography, the title Smithsonian Institution, Geography: A Visual Encyclopedia was a natural fit. This selection makes for a beautiful coffee table book and truly covers the basics of all the major touch points of what I learned in University. It’s amazing that thousands of dollars of tuition can be pretty much summed up in those 300 pages!

things to do outsideWith my love of science and exploration, my next choice was something I could share with my son. The book Great Things to do Outside offers 365 “awesome” outdoor activities for us to enjoy together. While bug collecting, worm charming, and tree climbing aren’t everyone’s idea of fun – there are also other ‘safe’ activities like planting seeds, cloud spotting, and sidewalk chalk. Whatever the activity however, it is sure to provide a great way to spend time with your children and learn about the earth.

I was amazed at all the fantastic titles available to expecting moms or new parents in the Baby Boutique collection. Though this phase for my ten-year old son is well over – it was a great opportunity for me to ask my sister-in-law, who is due with her first baby later this month, what kinds of information she would find most useful as a new mother. While many books offered pre-natal information, or those for feeding an older baby, I settled on Baby Care: Everything You Need to Know by Anne Peters, after recalling a comment my dear sister-in-law made about feeling clueless at how to take care of a new born. As I flipped through the photos on each page, and read the coinciding reference material, I had a flood of flash-backs come to me in an instant all about the needs of babies from how to handle non-stop crying, bottle vs. breast feeding, and the early days of extreme fatigue & sleeplessness. While the book serves as a great form of birth control for myself, I’m certain my sister-in-law and brother will find great value in the plethora of “what to do” reference information in this easy to read book.
