Build your own toy with Smart Lab Toys!

you build it headphonesBy Tara Richter…

My nine-year-old son has an incredible amount of energy, of which I’m a tad-bit jealous.  Unless I’m really trying to focus on something, I can pretty much tune out the constant noise and movement.  For years I’ve called him my little mosquito, referring to that little buzzing sound around your head.

One night about a week ago, I was working on some things at the kitchen table and my little mosquito starts buzzing around.  Unable to focus, I told him to find something to do. “Like what?” he replied.  That’s when I remembered the You-Build-It Headphones from Smart Lab Toys I received to review.  I called him to the table and gave that buzzing mosquito something to land on and be still for a while.  I was actually in awe, as I watched him carefully read through the instructions and spend the next hour working methodically through each of the steps to put the headphones together.

Isaiah workingOnce complete, these headphones will flash to the beat of the music and are compatible with iPhone, iPod, iPad, smartphones and other music devices.  Smart Lab Toys pride themselves on making toys that allow kids to explore, create and experiment through hands on learning.  In this case, the process of putting the headphones together allows kids to build really cool customized headphones, all the while learning about electricity, sound technology. I was really impressed with my son’s keen interest of working through each step, his focus on understanding, and the sense of pride he felt as accomplished getting pieces together. Although he isn’t finished building these yet, he is definitely enjoying the process to get there, after all, it’s about the journey – not the destination.  To see a 30-sec video on the headphones and finished product – click here.
