Last month, I was approached with the opportunity to review the new Canon Rebel SL1 with my family. We were asked if we had any upcoming events that we could photograph to fully experience the versatility, options, and lightweight aspects of the camera. “Actually,” I said, “we’re welcoming a new puppy into our family!” What perfect timing!
Cali came to us from a breeder in California. No, I didn’t specifically pick California to be fancy – my friend Candace who used to be a mommy blogger but sold her blog to pursue her business full time has had me wanting one of her Moo Cow Labradoodles for a few years now (cute name right?). We decided to put down a deposit this spring and waited anxiously for our new puppy to arrive. With my husband and daughter both suffering from dander allergies, a Australian Multigen Labradoodle was a great choice. Bringing a puppy into a family rather than an older dog was the choice I felt most comfortable with too. We didn’t tell the kids about the puppy, and instead gave them a shock when we picked up Cali at the airport a few weeks ago (of course I captured it on video!)
Now, back at home, we’re getting adjusted to a family of 5 + puppy! The first three nights of kennel training were hell (I didn’t realize she was part wolf the way she howled!) but then something clicked and she got it! Potty training is coming along quite well and the biggest thing we’re working on beyond potty is puppy nibbling. Hands, little girl’s hair, toes, ponies, Barbies…it’s all fair game to her.
Portrait setting with lovely outdoor lighting (love outdoor lighting!)
The 3 photos above were taken using the Continuous Shooting Mode which gives you a ton of pictures but ensures you get the perfect shot with no blur!
The above 2 shots were taken on Auto! Yay for Auto producing the perfect shot, colors, and focus!
Moving indoors, I’m not a fan of flash photography at all, but was happy with the way the light was distributed here!
Of course, in my daily life and for this blog I take pictures of more than the dog. I’ve been working on a lot of food photography over the past few years and I am so excited about the New Scene Modes on the Rebel SL1, specifically Food Scene Mode which sets everything up perfectly to give you the best food-photography shot! While setting my own ISO on the touch screen is easy, it’s still a bit of a science so having a Scene Mode to do the work for me is perfection!
The above photo was taken this weekend using the Food Scene Mode. I was really happy with how it turned out, and will definitely be using it every time from now on!
While I haven’t had a substantial amount of time to use the Canon Rebel SL1 thus far, it has been in my hand almost every day since I received it a few weeks ago. If I’m not taking pictures of the kids doing something silly, or the dog simply being a dog, I’m busy photographing items for this blog and especially focusing on food photography. Picking up my other DSLR camera is a surprise now – I did not realize how heavy it was until I started using the lightweight Canon Rebel SL1. I also find the Canon so much easier to handle in the palm of my left hand, while setting up the shoot with my right.
If you don’t have a DSLR camera yet and are looking for one to start with, the Canon Rebel SL1 would be perfect to start with because of all the helpful on-screen information and ease of use. When everything is set up perfectly for you, like the Scene Modes, you’ll be so much happier with the results and will have more confidence to try different Scene Modes on your own, or maybe venture off Auto (I know, it’s scary, but you can do it!)
If you’re already familiar with DSLR cameras, like me, I’d encourage the Canon Rebel SL1 as a step-up as it was for me. It’s smaller, more lightweight, and has a ton of features and options that my camera purchased 3 years ago doesn’t have. I’m quite smitten with my Rebel! What Feisty girl wouldn’t love a rebel though? 😉
Look for the Canon Revel SL1 at places like Amazon.ca
cant believe how much puppy has grown since you last posted a picture so cute. fingers crossed for giveaway I have been longing for a camera and hinting to no avail for ages now
We took her to the Vet today and in 2 weeks she’s gained 2 pounds! Good luck in the giveaway Chandra!
What a cute puppy!!! We have a black and white parti purebred poodle and she has similar markings, we call her our little cow 🙂 Great pictures, looks like an amazing camera!
Oh Judy you’ll have to send me a picture of her! I love the parti coloring and she’s definitely our little moo cow as well! My dad (in his 70’s) said, “She looks like a holstein.” Yup.
Love the food scene mode shot and boy is that puppy cute, almost makes me want one, almost.
She is a handful Julia but with 5 kids…what’s one more my friend? 😉
The food scene mode is simply amazing, so happy it’s on this camera (clearly, LOL!)
of all the blogs I’ve seen posting about this camera, you have the best photos by far. i’m not just saying that because of the cute puppy being the subject. your food scene photo looked good too. i’m just trying out photography and not very good. I tend to forget about ISO. was doing some indoor photos of a baby and had it set at 3200 or something ridiculous like that. my husband shook his head at me. I use auto a lot to make sure I get some decent photos.
Thank you so much for saying that Danielle, I really appreciate it!
Photography is definitely a skill and I am by no means any expert on the subject but one thing I’ve learned is that it takes time to understand your camera and what you need to do to get a great shot. That’s one reason I love the Canon because it definitely HELPS you get those great shots with the Scene Modes. Once you are more confident you can then play around with ISO. I’ve *just* started experimenting more with ISO in the past year or so and only after taking a photography course to really wrap my brain around the how and why.
Lighting is hugely important (which is why I’m such a snob about flash and hate it!)
Keep practicing!
wow fantastic photos,, lovely daughter and puppy
It is wonderful that you can take pictures of Cali’s growth. Wonderful pictures too!

great pictures and omg i love your kids ,dog ..
What a little sweetheart! That face kills me. I’m more of a cat person, but this wee puppy may change my mind.
Right? My mom says she has a monkey face. I wasn’t insulted…she does look like a little monkey – almost an Ikea monkey. 😛
very adorable puppy.. i asked my landlord could we get a small dog and she said no because she doesn’t like them.. smh.. i’ll be getting my house soon and i’ll get my girl and boy soon enough..
I want to pick that dog up and smush it. (in a good way smush) she is so adoarable, I love doodles they always seem happy and very loving. where we used to live there was one next door Charlie he was a doll
Great action shot pictures. Did you do a post on how to decide when it was time for you to add a pet into your family? My kids are asking for a dog now..my wife and I are dog lovers and we wouldn’t mind getting a pet, just not sure if it’s time for the kids yet.
Thanks Darwin, no I actually didn’t do a post on that because it really was a secret from the kids (and everyone, really!)
We have been thinking about it for a long time and even had a rescue dog for a whole 2 days last year that didn’t work out. We then sat down and made a list of all the things we wanted in a dog (puppy that we raise around kids from day 1, hypoallergenic, smart, medium size, non shedding) and a Labradoodle was the answer!
I don’t know if a family can ever truly be ready to tell you the truth – it’s the same as having kids. You’re never fully prepared and there’s never a perfect time – you just jump in, hold your breath, and come up for air when you need it!
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a cuter puppy! Love the name, Moo Cow Labradoodle, because the third shot down totally reminded me of a cow.
The food scene mode looks like it does a great job!! I am drooling over this camera!!!
What a sweet puppy and your photos with your Cannon are fabulous.
Great photos! Love the puppy and her name too 🙂 your daughter is definitely your mini! I thought it was you in the second picture on auto!

Thanks Erika! It’s this recipe (which I now have to update with my better photo!) http://feistyfrugalandfabulous.com/2013/02/easy-banana-bread/
The muffins are square because I use a Pampered Chef brownie pan to make them!
