Last year for Christmas, my Dad and Step-Mom gave my siblings and I some fantastic kitchen knives. However on more than one occasion I cut my fingers trying to finely chop and slice fruits and vegetables. I can happily say those days are behind me now and I can save my precious fingertips by using Microplane Adjustable Slicer($34.95 CAD).

One of the things I hate most about eating my vegetables is the amount of time it takes to wash, cut and prepare them. The Microplane Adjustable Slicer significantly cuts down on the amount of time I spend in meal preparation since I can easily cut all my vegetables at once and very quickly without having to eye-ball it with a knife & cutting board. The ultra sharp slicer cuts paper-thin slices and adjusts to medium or thick slices too. It also comes with a detachable julienne blade to make long, even strips of things like cucumbers and carrots to add to salads or other dishes. The stainless steel blade on the slicer, as well as the julienne blade, are incredibly sharp. The slicer thankfully also comes with a food holder to grab onto the item being sliced to keep fingers out of the way.

The long & thin traditional microplane was originally a woodworking tool, but is perfect to grate hardest cheeses, or to add citrus zest to your recipes. Previously, I used my cheese grater to ‘try’ to get lemon or lime zest however it proved to be incredibly difficult as the grate barely marked the outside of the citrus fruit. When I saw Microplane’s photo called What Makes a Microplane Tool Sharp, I understood why. Stamped teeth, of most traditional cheese graters, are dull versus the very sharp grating teeth of Microplane graters.
