Microplane – What a GRATE Idea!

Microplane reviewBy Tara Richter…

I like watching the odd cooking show, not because I ever really intend to make their recipe, but mostly just for some general ideas on how to do things, different ingredients to try, or a look at some neat kitchen gadget.

One item I’ve seen again and again on cooking shows, and to which most chef’s say is a must have, is a microplane. It certainly looked like it was a good idea, but then again – was it really THAT important I wondered? After receiving a grater set from Microplane I can say that I’m a firm believer that every kitchen should have one. The long & thin traditional microplane was originally a woodworking tool, but is perfect to grate the hardest cheeses, or to add citrus zest to your recipes. Previously, I used my cheese grater to ‘try’ to get lemon or lime zest however it proved to be incredibly difficult as the grate barely marked the outside of the citrus fruit. When I saw Microplane’s photo called What Makes a Microplane Tool Sharp, I understood why. Stamped teeth, of most traditional cheese graters, are dull versus the very sharp grating teeth of Microplane graters.

microplane I gave the traditional microplane a shot one evening while making a batch of fresh bruschetta with lemon zest. WOW! I must say I was hugely impressed with the ease it took to get the zest from the lemon and the added bonus it was all uniform and nice looking versus the butcher job the of the cheese grater. I’m looking forward to adding freshly grated nutmeg to the top of my eggnog this holiday season.

Microplane also has a wide variety of other graters including the new Elite Series. This set includes four graters including Fine, Coarse, Ribbon, and Extra Course depending on the desired outcome. I have to say I most appreciated the cut-resistant glove I was also sent along with the Microplane Elite Series since the teeth are so very sharp, and I have terrible luck in catching my fingers once the food I’m grating gets down to that last tiny little piece. Due to their sharpness, the Microplane Elite Series Graters come with a plastic cover for storage that also doubles as a grating catch feature complete with a measuring cup to a 1 cup capacity, helping to take the guess work out of the amount to grate for your recipes.

Have a foodie on your Christmas list this year? The Microplane Elite Series and the Traditional Microplane make a great choice! All the graters are available individually or as sets. The Elite series runs at $74.95 (around $20.00 individually) and the traditional microplane at just $14.95. These items are available at places like London Drugs as well as smaller, more local kitchen stores depending on your city. To find out where to purchase at a store near you, use the Microplane store locator on their website. Of course if you’re like me and would rather do all your holiday shopping online, you can order from their website, however keep in mind that all orders are shipped from the USA and appropriate timing to arrive should be allowed.
