A Tortle for Your Tot?

A lot goes into caring for a newborn baby. As new moms, we have a lot to worry about don’t we?! A concern for many new parents is something called “flat head syndrome”. This condition is a result of babies spending too much time laying on the back of their heads, or if they tend to favour one side. It’s not the easiest thing to prevent, considering our babies spend so much time resting their lil’ noggins (sleeping, car seats, swings, bouncy chairs…strollers!)

The Tortle is a repositioning aid for new babies to help prevent/treat mild to moderate flat head syndrome. Newborns need to be repositioned regularly because their heads are so soft, and prone to this condition. The Tortle makes prevention easy: simply place the support roll behind your baby’s ear on one side…and change sides every 2-3 hours. To help treat a developing flat spot, consistently position the roll over the favoured spot. Once it is corrected, continue using the Tortle on the 2-3 hour rotation.

dr jane mom_baby 4The Tortle was invented by a pediatrician and mother of 4, Dr. Jane. It’s FDA cleared, and recommended for all newborns up to 6 months. The hats are sized S (0-2 mos) M (2-4 mos) L (4-6 mos). Since the beanies fit so snug, my newborn started in a size medium which is perfect for a baby 10-15lbs.

The best part about the Tortle is they are adorable. They come in a variety of colours and prints (check out the Whimsical Elephants)…though I enjoy my solid white cap because it goes with everything! Your baby can look adorable, while you have piece of mind knowing that precious melon is perfect. The Tortle is machine washable and the website offers a discount if you buy a few at a time!
