My Fabulous Life

The Classic Caesar

It’s Thanksgiving weekend here in Canada!  I have no great turkey recipes to share (I’ve never cooked one in my life, I have cavity-fear issues…hand…in…ew) so I thought I’d share the other great part about Thanksgiving weekend – the beverages!

I just returned from another trip to the US, and like I usually do when out for dinner in the US, I complained about not being able to order a Caesar cocktail!  Us Canadians love our Caesars and it’s a head scratcher why they are not readily available in the US.

I explained the basic concoction to dinner guests the other night and then promised I’d blog it, since I heard that it may actually be possible to buy Mott’s Clamato Juice in the US at certain grocery stores.  I also discovered you can order Mott’s Clamato on Amazon.com!  So, if you’re a Canuck in the US missing Caesars or a US citizen that’s endured my whining about Caesars, now you can try one for yourself.

The Caesar was invented in Calgary in 1969 by restaurant manager Walter Chell of the Calgary Inn (now the Westin).

Classic Caesar Recipe
4-6 oz Clamato Juice (yes, juice with clam broth in it, just ignore that image – you don’t taste it!)
1 oz vodka
2 dashes Tobasco or Frank’s Red Hot Sauce
4 dashes Worcestershire Sauce
Pour over ice and garnish with a celery stalk, slice of pickle, or pickled asparagus

It sounds weird, right?  It’s a drink that can be tweaked to make the perfect blend (more or less hot sauce, worschestire, etc.) and variations on the garnish can change the taste too.  A friend recently shared that she tops hers with a little bit of pickle juice – genius!

  • Speak for yourself… us Canadians don’t all like Caesars! lol
I’d much rather stick my hand in a turkey’s butt than drink anything with Clamato juice. Icky icky icky!!! (Next time you’re in town, you gotta come over and I’ll teach you to overcome your turkey carcass fears. I make a kick-ass turkey!!)

  • No Caesars for me this weekend, the clam juice part just icks me out, but the boyfriend absolutely loves them. Probably his top pick as far as drinks go. He thinks they go perfectly with everything!

  • I Love Caesars! They spicier the better… I like to have it with a pepperonccini pepper and a celery stick garnish. YUM! 😀 (You do know that you can get turkeys w/out giblets or necks right? No hand in cavity business there… ;] )

  • Never thought of pickled asparagus a topper, but does that ever sounds delish. Is there such a thing as pickled asparagus sold in the jar? Making plans for my next Ceasar… mmmmm.

  • Pinacolada is my fav drink. Hubby loves his Ceasar though. Pickled Asparagus I hope my Costco has it; will check it out. Cooking my turkey on the BBQ Rotisserie for the first time today. Can’t wait to see how it turns out. Happy Thanksgiving everyone 🙂

  • Thanks for posting this! I wouldn’t have remembered how to make them without you blogging about it. I will have to put the ingredients on my grocery shopping list 🙂
