Today, October 27th, it’s National I Can Be Day here in Canada and I’m so happy to be a part of a program through Mom Central Canada to help spread the word about this inspiring program.
Who or what inspired you when you were a little girl? Barbie, as beautiful as she is, has taken some flack over the years for her looks (what celeb hasn’t?) which I always thought was a little funny. Critics looked at her body to point out everything that was wrong and how girl’s should look to other dolls to aspire to be like, yet for over 50 years Barbie has had some pretty awesome careers including that of a teacher, pediatrician and president of the United States. I happen to think, tiny waist or not, that’s a pretty fabulous career sampling to have.
I was a big Barbie fan when I was a little girl – I can still picture the 1980’s Barbie Motor Home I had and the fabulous mansion as well. I could play for hours with my dolls creating all sorts of life scenarios. Interestingly enough, my Barbies always had kids in tow.
As my girls grow they will play with Barbies (my almost-4 year old already does) and learn about how women can do anything they set out to do, just as we will teach my son the same about men. Though, as Beyonce put it in Girls Who Run The World:
Boy you know you love it
How we’re smart enough to make these millions
Strong enough to bare the children
Then get back to business
Yup.
National I Can Be Day in Canada will have participating schools bringing in Moms to speak to classrooms about their careers. The topic is an interesting one for me, and with my girls, because I want them to know that they can jump out into the world and be anything they want to be – and if that career choice is being a stay at home mom (which I was for many years) or a work from home mom (which I consider myself now), these choices are just as honorable as any out there. I know this because my own mom was a stay at home mom and a pretty fierce woman herself. 😉
The celebration about I Can Be does not end with just one day – there’s a great I Can Be site launched here www.bethevoice.ca with Canadian Parenting Coach Terry Carson sharing new themes, ideas and parenting tips on the site. So far, I’ve read some great content from Terry Carson – she’s passionate about sharing how we can raise our daughters so they are smarter, happier, and more fulfilled.
Check the page out when you have a moment – happy I Can Be day!!
Disclosure – I am participating in the Barbie I Can Be campaign by Mom Central Canada on behalf of Mattel Canada. I received compensation as a thank you for my participation. The opinions on this blog (as always) are my own.
