How many people still use an actual computer desk in their home or home office? I was filling out a survey for a stationery company yesterday and when asked about my home office I had to grin. While I do work from home, my home office consists of wherever I and my laptop are in the house. 10 years ago when desktop computers were in the majority of households, desks for both office and home were also a mainstay. Now, with many people owning laptops instead, computer desks and an actual home office are not as common.
We still have a desktop computer and a modern corner computer desk, and this is what my own kids use as their own area. If we only utilized a laptop for them, they’d be at the kitchen table or dining table (my husband’s favorite spot for his laptop) so I kind of like that they have their own area (which we of course supervise and make sure they are not wandering onto websites they should not be…yes my 6 year old knows how to Google!)
On the one hand the desk takes up a lot of room but again, it’s a nice area for the kids where they can color or play legos as well. So, what do other people do? Do you have an actual home office area or desk area for the kids? Or is it time to let it go?
I love having a desk and I love having a desktop computer. I need my space! And laptops need to be recharged all the time and they get warm.
I didn’t know I’m old-fashioned! lol

I used to have a desk (I still use a desktop PC, as I prefer it), but now I sit at a carved-out workstation built into the kitchen counter. I like it, it’s my own little nook. Plus it’s up high (I sit on a bar chair), so I feel tall! At 5’3″ (and that is pushing it!), I like feeling tall, lol.
Nikki if I ever did a custom kitchen redesign I’d definitely do a little desk/nook area – I like that idea!
We got rid of our desk a few months ago since we mostly use the lap top but I wish I now had a little desk of some sort for my lap top. I am killing my back with my bad posture sitting on the couch in front of the t.v.
My friend got a really nice table that you would use in a hallway and she uses that as a small desk for her lap top with a nice modern chair. I loved the idea. The table is slim and just perfect for a cup of coffee and book or two.
I just wish I had the space and layout so I could do the same. Next house maybe!
I want to let go. I use my laptop on the sofa or kitchen table. We have a big desk with an old computer for the kids. I would like it to go bye bye though.
We revived our desk into a spot in the kitchen…3 of our 4 kids use the computer so it is essential to see what they are playing or checking out! I also like to have a space for my Arbonne buisness! 🙂
My living room is huge so I have an office area. It’s not a desk but a table. I use a laptop so I can put it away when we have company. Having my office in the living room forces me to keep my desktop clean just in case company comes.
