Is your furnace on yet? If you live in a warmer climate your eyes probably bugged out with that question (actually, a few friends of mine here in Canada would feel the same as well!) Here on the Canadian prairies we’ve had our furnace on since early September. When we turn out furnace on for the first time, there’s a noticeable smell in the house. What is it? It’s the dust that has settled in the furnace ducts blowing out (gross, I know). Even after the first few days with the furnace running, you’re still going to find dust in the air when using the furnace all winter long. In a household where my son has asthma and my husband is sensitive to dust (Mr.Sneezy), we have to take extra steps to keep the air in our house clean.
We use furnace filters all the time. It’s essential! Filtrate Elite Allergen Filters from 3M, for example capture 94% of large airborne particles such as pollen, smoke, dust mite debris (ew) and pet dander from the air as it passes through the filter. These filters, however, capture up to 40 times more microscopic particles than ordinary fiberglass filters. Filters are also good for your heating and cooling systems in general because they hep maintain air flow and reduce energy consumption.
Other ways we reduce allergens in our household are by maintaining a carpet-free bedrooms, having a limit of 1 stuffed animal that each child can sleep with, using a special Pure Zone pillow for my son, using all-natural bedding products from Natura, and of course making sure to dust often to keep it to a minimum!
