The Lunch Bag Conundrum

With school having started here just last week, my mom friends and I are already stumped and asking each other the question, “What are YOU packing for lunches?”  We’re all hoping that one of us has a secret pantry full of ideas to make fantastic school lunches that will make our kids the envy of the class.  Instead, we’re left scratching our heads for ideas.  “Blog it!” seemed to be the logical way to go.

So, my fabulous mom readers, what are YOU packing for school lunches?  Right now, my 6 year old’s favorite is bologna sandwiches.  Before you grimace completely let me add in that these are on white bread (yummy white bread goodness, mmmm!)  Before you call the PTA on me, it’s enriched bread, ok?  And I like it.

So where was I before I started ducking the anti-white-bread army?  Oh yes, we were talking about  bologna.  So, my little guy will happily eat a variety of sandwiches (bologna being the favorite of course) but I’m pretty sure this is going to get boring by November.  I’m fortunate that his school is really health-conscious (no chewy fruit snacks allowed, no junk food in any form allowed in the lunch bag).  They have a milk program to avoid the sugary concentrate juice-boxes and they also have a veggie program where you can buy a card and have it hole-punched each day when you have a veggie/dip combo as your morning snack!

So, since he’s getting wholesome milk and healthy veggies at school, I usually pack a fruit along side his sandwhich and then….uh…then…well then I’m stuck.  Sometimes a granola bar, sometimes a pudding, sometimes some cheese slices.  What else, moms?

Once sandwiches are old news, what other ideas do you have for school lunches?  One idea I suggested to a few friends is to make your own lunchables.  You know those processed food snack packs that have some meat, some cheese and a choco bar in it?  I slice up some ham sausage for one container, some marble cheese for another container and some crackers in a bag (no chocolate bar here).  He loves this combo.  That’s all I got.

If you have some lunch ideas, please share them here!  I have a feeling my friends and I are not the only moms stuck in a rut already.
