DEET or no DEET, what’s a parent to do? Have you found a natural insect repellent that works as well as the DEET-containing ones? I’ve tried a few but have said to other moms when they’ve asked (on Facebook, in person, etc.) “nothing works as well as DEET.”
According to the J.R. Watkins site, studies have shown that a lower level of DEET does not offer less protection, but rather protection for a shorter period of time. There’s no point in dousing yourself and the kids in a heavily concentrated DEET formula promising to last for 6 hours when you’re going out to the park for 1 hour.
J.R. Watkins Great Outdoors Insect Repellent Spray contains 5.0% DEET and smells great – my husband prefers this one over our usual brand based on the smell alone! I do find that it’s best for shorter periods in the backyard or at the park and if you’re going to be out longer, it needs to be reapplied, but I prefer the lighter amount of DEET compared to other brands that can be as high as 25% in some brands. Most family sprays I’ve found have ranged between 7%-15%.
If your search for an all-natural repellent hasn’t resulted in something comparable to DEET protection, yet you are concerned about DEET in general, J.R. Watkins Insect Repellent Spray may be the happy medium your family is looking for. We have about 1/4 of our 150ml bottle left after a month, so it’s been put to great use with our family, with no complaints.
