I am a reality show fan – every summer I look forward to Big Brother with catty excitement, and my husband and I always watch Survivor together. I of course had to watch The Bachelorette this Spring because Jill is a Canadian gal like myself!
I had no idea that Total Drama Island existed until just recently, and this past weekend I watched Total Drama Island – The Complete Season on DVD.
The show is part realty-show parody, part entertaining treat as we follow 22 teens that are sent to Camp Wawanakwa, the oldest, ickyest, and most run down summer camp in Northern Ontario. The contestants include some of the typical teenage stereotypes: a goth loner, a posh-princess, a chilled out surfer girl, a jock, and of course a delinquent among others. The host even reminds me of a certain reality show host!
Stuck together for 8 weeks at Camp Wawanakwa, the teens not only endure the challenges (which get as ridiculous as they are funny) but also typical camp-life horrors like leaky cabins and gross food. There’s even a showmance The prize worth all this torture – $100,000 of course!
The series finale on December 11, 2008 set new records for the Cartoon Network being the #1 prime time performance of the day among kids 2-11, kids 6-11 and tweens 9-14. The interactive online site www.totaldramaisland.com enjoyed huge success as fans created more than 2 million avatars within three months of the series premiere. The DVD includes all 27 episodes (more than 600 minutes total) along with bonus features including cast interviews. If you have a Total Drama Island fan already in your household, this will be a much coveted DVD. If you have a reality show addiction, this might be worth adding to your collection!
