Last week, I brought you a review and giveaway on two pregnancy books from Meadowbrook Press. Carrying on with the parenting books, I now have two books from Meadowbrook Press that deal with parenting issues with older children.
The Siblings’ Busy Book written by Lisa Hanson and Heather Kempskie is a great resource for all parents, especially those at home with their children all day or for daycare providers looking for creative ways to make those days seem shorter. The Siblings’ Busy Book has over 200 activities for kids of all ages that can be done together. Of course us moms are super creative and can come up with unique activities, but after awhile we need a break too. When the creative well runs dry, pull out this book and choose from activities that are organized into categories like Rainy Day Fun or In the Kitchen.
In the Learning & Exploring section, I found a fun activity using an old phone book. Simply rip the phone book into sections so each child has a piece. Babies and toddlers can have fun ripping out the pages and crumpling them. Your preschooler can practice his number skills by circling all the 4’s on the page, for example.
Discipline Without Shouting or Spanking by Jerry Wyckoff phD and Barbara C. Unell offers “practical solutions to the most common preschool behavior problems.” The Contents section makes it easy to find answers to the current issue you may be having, whether it’s Fighting Cleanup Routines or Talking Back for example. Each issue is broken down into sections: Preventing the Problem and Solving The Problem. Within Solving The Problem, there are two sections as well: What To Do and What Not To Do. I liked how this book was easy to read – no long chapters citing various studies but rather quick and easy solutions for weary parents.
