Tie Buddies is a product that I think all parents with older children will wish they had, and parents with younger children like me are happy to have available. It seems like there’s a constant learning curve with children – they master one skill and are soon met with another challenge. Tying shoelaces is one task that I had not attempted yet with my 4 year old. I admit I kind of took the easy way out and purposely avoided shoes with laces for my son. When it came time to review Tie Buddies, my son used my own shoes to practice on since he doesn’t even own a pair with laces yet!
I read on the Tie Buddies site that the average age of children learning to tie their own shoes has increased with some children learning as late as 9 or 10. So, I’m not the only mom that has pushed back this task! I had tried once or twice in the past to explain to my son how to do it, but he was frustrated easily with trying to keep his hands on the right spots on the laces so I gave up.
Tie Buddies give little hands something to actually grip when typing laces, which helps relieve the frustration for both little ones and moms.
Using the instructions on the back, my son and I sat down with my own shoes and worked together to learn how to tie laces. Tie Buddies suggests using a story to teach, so the race cars in our story were on a winding track in a race to see who the final winner would be. It’s not the most creative story but it worked for us!
My 4 year old is not a lace tying master just yet, as we have just received this product a few days ago, but he is well on his way to mastering yet another skill and I am a happy mama with far less frustration in teaching him how to do it.
