I am a work in progress. I am one of those moms who would like to be more green, more eco-friendly, but who does not want to give up many of life’s luxuries in the process. I don’t profess to be some eco-minded chick striving to make the world a better place each day, because that’s just not me. I try, and when I find sites and products that make it exceptionally easy for me to be green, I’m thrilled!
Gorgeous and Green is a Canadian owned company based in Fernie BC and headed by a fabulous woman named Lenka who is one of those people, after meeting via email exchanges, you know you’d want to be friends with. I have to copy/paste this profile of her from her site, as I couldn’t explain it any better than the site does:
She believes in saying hello to everyone she passes on the street. She believes in supporting the locally owned coffee shop and bookstore. She believes in buying from Canadian manufacturers. She believes in eating organic, locally grown produce. She believes that she can own a business that is personally rewarding, and gives back to the earth. Yet she loves great design principles, and modern organic products. That’s why she’s merged the two ideas to bring you one unique Eco-Chic Boutique.
This girl knows her stuff, and has some pretty rigid criteria for what items are sold on her site. Have you ever purchased something you thought was organic or green only to learn that a very small % of the product actually is? Lenka helps people like me, who are really new to understanding what it means to be ecologically responsible, understand what products make the mark and why. Products on Gorgeous and Green must meet one of the following criteria: handmade, organic, natural, recycled, fairly traded, socially responsible, and sustainable.
As well, each product has a Green Facts tab, where you can read about why this product meets Gorgeous and Green’s standards. I love this feature!
The Mom & Kids section of the site (of course where I go to look first) has some familiar brands like Green Toys, Babylegs (organic of course), and Baby Star. You may recall that I did a Baby Star giveaway recently. The Poodle Blankets from Baby Star looked so luxurious on the site, and Lenka sent me one to review (how excited was I?!)
The blanket is even more soft and cuddly than it looks and is now Nevaeh’s naptime snuggly. It’s the perfect size for a snuggly blanket, measuring 28″ x 36″. I learned that what makes it green is that it’s a mix of formaldehyde-free polyester and 100% cotton. It’s kind of disturbing that formaldehyde-free fabric is a feature, one would assume all our items for babies are free of this but the scary thing is that it’s not.
Right now, these blankets are on sale for $58.00 CDN (regular $73.00). If you are looking for something unique to pamper a baby at an upcoming shower, Baby Star Poodle Blankets are perfect. I wish I would have had this blanket when Nevaeh was a newborn, I’d have loved to wrap her up in something so luxurious!
Gorgeous and Green would like to offer one lucky reader a $50.00 gift certificate!! You can put it towards the Baby Star Poodle Blankets now that they are on sale for such a great price, or any number of products in the store (hey, I just covered one section of the store, there’s so much more to see!)
To enter, just go to Gorgeous and Green and tell me what you would buy with the $50.00 gift certificate if you won!
