Holiday Shopping Tips

You may have already started your holiday shopping, or perhaps you’re just doing some research now before you head out in December during the peak holiday shopping rush (some people thrive on that atmosphere!) Wherever you are in that journey, here are some tips to help you navigate the holiday shopping season this year like a shopping expert (yes, that title actually exists because, well, it’s 2017!)

Do Your Research: Canadians love a good bargain. A recent survey found that 57 per cent of Canadians surveyed shop online looking for better pricing. You can use online shopping to compare prices so you can help ensure you get the best deal without having to face a crowded mall, but going from one website to another is time consuming. Plus, you may have deals right in your own city and could miss out on them and pay shipping because you didn’t do your research!

Instead, I suggest downloading the Flipp App to help you plan your shopping well ahead of time.

Flipp brings all of your flyers, coupons and deals right to your phone so you can save time and money when you shop.

– Browse circulars for inspiration
– Use the search feature to find particular items (and then compare prices before ever setting foot out the door!)
– Make a in-app shopping list to stay on track:
– Turn Santa’s list into a savings list with Flipp’s shopping list which shows you deals for each item on your Shopping list.
– Sync your list with Mr. Claus and partner on your holiday to-do’s

Sign up for savings: Sign up with your favourite retailers for their email updates. They often send out information about upcoming sales, or special pricing and offers for their subscribers. You can always unsubscribe in January after the busy shopping season, or you may discover you like a particular retailer’s updates.

Use Your Rewards: I’m a huge fan of rewards cards and programs, and the holidays are the perfect time to reap the benefits of those rewards and save on your overall budget. Take a moment on a Saturday morning over coffee to see your rewards standing with your favourite programs.

Consider international expenses: If you’re like the 39 per cent of Canadians who shop online for the ability to shop with international retailers, make sure you factor in duty taxes, exchange rates, and consider the return shipping costs, as those costs can quickly add up.

Cut shipping costs: Many stores offer reduced or even free shipping with a minimum dollar amount spent. Think about how many people you can cross off your list from one retailer – it can help save you time and money.

I summarized all these tips on a segment at Global News Morning Regina here:

Even though we celebrate Thanksgiving in October here in Canada, we still get to participate in Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales because, well, we’re influenced by US sales and trends and plus – who doesn’t like an excuse to shop for amazing deals? Ensure that you utilize the Flipp App now to see what retailers will be discounting for these super shopping days! You can also settle down with your laptop and visit Flipp.com to research at home as well!
