Breathe In, Breathe Out

I don’t know what it is lately, perhaps it’s because we’ve recently returned from vacation and the memory of sand between my toes is so fresh, but I can’t stop thinking about summer. I’ve been browsing my favorite stores online looking to see if their patio furniture is available yet, and thinking about my favorite Sangria recipes (because it doesn’t feel the same having Sangria in the winter, have you noticed that?) I just feel so much better in the summer months!

Unfortunately, I can’t speed up time so until then, I’ve been trying to figure out ways to embrace winter or at the very least coast through it until summer is finally here. This year I’m again working with Saskatchewan In Motion on their #Mom2Mom Podcast series, sharing tips and ideas from our panel of moms on ways to get Saskatchewan families more active. It’s a great partnership for me as the host because I am always learning from our panel of smart, innovative and active moms.

winter in saskatchewan

One common piece of advice from moms this winter has been to just get out there! Yes, getting outdoors in the winter with the kids certainly takes more time than it does in the summer (have I mentioned how I miss sitting on my deck?) but by simply getting yourself outside, you’re taking an important, and healthy, step for yourself, your piece of mind, and of course it’s great for your kids to see mom and dad enjoying the outdoors too!

The picture above was taken earlier this winter when we had more snow, but admittedly this winter has had very little snow (which is odd for Saskatchewan). I didn’t realize how much winter fun was dependent on a blanket of fresh snow until we didn’t have any! Still, during the cooler months, it’s great for the family to get out even if it’s just for a walk with the dog in the evening after dinner. We do that a lot in the summer, so we should still be doing that in the summer even if the walk is a bit shorter due to the weather.

toboganning in Saskatchewan

If you have enough snow, a great weekend afternoon tobogganing is great for the soul (maybe not so great for mom’s body, take a bath after to relax, mom!), and even the neighborhood park is a fun place to visit with the added element of some snow packed hills. We have countless outdoor skating rinks here in Regina, and of course the tobogganing hills are everywhere (Saskatchewan IS indeed pretty flat, but we have some hills, honest!)

Remember this video? I shared it last summer – it’s part of Nature Valley’s #RediscoverNature campaign and yes, it tugs at the heartstrings a bit. I think about this video, and how quickly the years go by (yes, even those winters!)

This picture is of my son when he was 6. SIX. He’s 11 now and I swear I just blinked. So, if you’re staying indoors and avoiding winter, waiting for the warmth of summer (I get you, mom, I do!) you’re missing out on your children’s day, the opportunity to get outside with them, giggle in the snow, and take some deep breaths to cleanse your mind. Give it a shot this month, and see how much better you feel for it!

  • Great post Tenillle! Thanks for the mention. Glad to hear the podcast is inspiring you as well as our audience!

  • It’s great that the kids get out and get some fresh air and some exercise, but I myself hate’s the snow and the cold, I just want to stay in and hibernate!!

  • We spent so much time outdoors as kids, but we also lived in a small town and grew up in an age without electronics. I raised my daughter in a large city and was fearful almost every time she was outdoors. I moved to a smaller town last year and we’ll try to get out and enjoy some of our wonderful winter.

  • I don’t live in snow country so that’s huge for me, but I do live where there’s a lot of rain. It has been fairly mild this winter so I ‘ll get out when the rain lets up.

  • Kids and dogs definitely motivate people to get out in the winter. My cats and I prefer to stay in with tea and a book! 🙂

  • I get out as much as I can, but notice so many parents in my town do not take their kids out in winter- pretty sad the kids love snow

  • The kids today miss out on so much by not getting outdoors. There is too much technology today. For me, I hate being cold but when I was a kid it didn’t bother me at all. The only nice thing about winter is when its over. I do love to go skidooing though.

  • Oh how i loved winter,ski-ing sledding ski-dooing in my younger healthier years when i could, now i just want to stay in and hibernate…but i do enjoy watching others enjoy the season.

  • Your so lucky that you got to go away but I must say that the only time I seem to be able to drag my butt outside is to walk my dog because he just loves the colder weather and he especially loves the snow unlike me. But I do it to keep him healthy. Other than that I would love to just hibernate as much as possible.

  • I always bring my granddaughter outdoor when she comes on her weekly visit for the day. We go to the parc and play hide and go seek, she’s 3 and always hide at the same place…haha! I make sure I dress warm because I don’t like the cold that much!

  • Yes, fresh air , and just being together and in each others moments is worth more than anything! They grow up way too fast!

  • I am dreaming of summer just like you!! I just wish the winter was not so bitter cold out or I would get out!! But that is my problem I need to get moving anytime of the year especially winter!

  • We’re new to Canada, and all 4 of us are still loving the snow. We found some great second hand gear for the kids, so I don’t need to stop the snow touching and puddle jumping!

  • We just got enough snow here in Ontario to do anything in it this past weekend but it is already melting. I am not a big fan of winter but we do try and get out to enjoy it some.

  • I think you are correct in saying you just need to GET OUT there to enjoy winter.. I really do not enjoy winter myself and the feeling of being cooped up is quite sad to me; that being said I am sure I COULD get out there and enjoy if I chose to find the right activity!

  • Great post! So great to get out there and get some fresh air. We don’t get much snow here in Vancouver but the cold crisp air is nice sometimes!

  • So true, although I don’t want to admit it. I, too, am a summer fanatic. And this year, even though we have had such amazing weather as well – talk about a mild winter! It has been so hard for me to bundle the kids up and go outside, especially being in the last months of pregnancy. But getting out into the fresh air and running around a bit does make for some good memories. It makes everyone feel better, and it makes coming inside to warm up by the fire all that much cozier! Thanks for the reminder!

  • We are lucky here in Victoria that we can do things outside all year long! We don’t get snow though, so we do miss that.
