Summer Backyard Fun – Here Are My Top Toy Picks!

Summer vacation is finally here and parents are certainly looking ahead to the next two months with excitement…and a little bit of apprehension. While camping, family vacations and summer camps are all exciting parts of summer, what about the days in between? You know, those days at home when the kids would rather be behind a screen than outside.

Heading to the neighborhood park or simply enjoying backyard, both are backdrops for creating summer memories as well. Here are my top 5 toys for backyard fun this summer!  Check out the video here and see more info below.

bunch o balloons

  • Bunch O Balloons

Taking social media by storm, Bunch O Balloons launched via Kickstarter and is now on store shelves across Canada (and online at Mastermind Toys and Chapters Indigo to name a few).

Remember tediously filling water balloons one by one? A girlfriend recently did this for a birthday party and it took her an hour. With Bunch O Balloons you can fill 35 balloons at once, and their packaging states you can fill 100 balloons in 60 seconds! Busy parents love life-hacks like this that can help save them time, and kids (and grown-ups!) love a good water balloon fight or backyard game.

crayola colour foam

  • Crayola

Of course, we have to include Crayola Sidewalk Chalk when thinking about backyard fun. Utilizing sidewalks creates the biggest canvas, but we love our backyard chalkboard for displaying masterpieces too.

Crayola Neon Washable Sidewalk Paint and Outdoor ColourFoam are other great ways to add some color to your day – the Outdoor ColourFoam is especially fun for creating designs or spraying – and it washes off easily (because of the PH on our skin, it won’t stain).

Nerf Rebelle

  • Nerf

Nerf has been synonymous with summer for years. Now, Nerf Rebelle encourages girls to get in on the action.

Nerf Super Soaker Flash Flood Blaster holds 23 ounces of water and literally can soak your target with two separate nozzles, while the Nerf Rebelle Super Soaker Tri Threat Blaster has three blasting nozzles holding 25 ounces of water, and besides, it’s pretty. 😉

Twister moves skip it

  • Twister

Twister now goes beyond the basement board game into the backyard with Twister Moves Skip It, which keeps count of your skips and Twister Moves Tracker which keeps track of every step, jump, and slide like the grown-up Fitbit and similar items that may already be in parent’s drawers after the New Years excitement has waned. 😉

coleman washer toss

  • Coleman

Adults love backyard games too, so ones like this Coleman Washer Toss game that are family-friendly encourage everyone to get in the game. I like that it comes in it’s own travel bag making it easy to take to a BBQ or camping trip.

Summer in Saskatchewan is short, so it’s important to get outside and take advantage of every moment we can. While screen time certainly has a place (and this mom definitely utilizes it!) I also know how important it is to get outside and move. It’s also worth noting that your kids are watching YOU mom and dad! Get outside in the backyard with them and have some fun this summer!

  • I’ve been searching high & low for a Bunch O Balloons, they’re sold out everywhere!

And I loved Skip It growing up, I know my 10 year old would love one! (Says the Mom who is currently wearing her Fitbit Flex!)

    Thanks for the toy suggestions!

  • These look cool! I know my kids would go crazy for almost any of them! The bunch o balloons is genius!

  • wow lots of great and fun ideas , thanks for sharing my grandson would love Bunch O Balloons 🙂

  • Seriously, the Bunch o Balloons are great fun for an adult party!! Forget the kiddies 😉

  • Love the Nerf rebelle stuff for summer fun. Their bow and arrow is also pretty amazing. I’m not sure who enjoys their products more…the kids….or us…?!

  • My kids have been on a water balloon kick lately so I am definitely going to pick up some Bunch O’Balloons!

  • Great playtime fun, I love the colour foam, and the idea of filling that many balloons at once!!

  • Some great recommendations here! I really must look for the colour foam…that looks like it’d be loads of fun!

  • They all look like great products. I want to get the Coleman Washer game for when we are camping!

  • Bunch O Balloons is genius! Fill out a whole bunch of balloons at the same time. Wow! I love your list, lots of summer fun.

  • These are great summer fun ideas like the Twister Moves and the color foam!!!I know how much kids like balloons. They have an enchanting magic to them with all children. They are a must have for sure!

  • I had not heard of the Outdoor ColourFoam before so am glad I watched your interview. I must get some for our family reunion at the end of July! I already have water guns on my list, so that was taken care of. The “Bunch O Balloons” is a brilliant idea – my only concern is the environmental cost if all those balloons don’t get picked up! Do you think kids could be bribed into picking them all up after all the fun & games? I couldn’t leave them around for fear my dogs and chickens would choke on the debris!

Thanks for the great ideas on everything though. Out of the loop since my kids are grown and my grand-daughter is just getting big enough to enjoy new toys!

  • My family loves washer toss.. I seen the video for the Bunch O Balloons on facebook last week and thought it was very cool.

  • I totally need to get a hold of the Bunch O Balloons! Not sure who would enjoy them more, the kids or myself!

  • Oh my goodness! The Bunch O Balloons and Nerf Rebelle have been use hits at our house this summer. I went out and bought 3 Nerf water soakers after I saw your segment on Global! So much fun!

  • some good ideas but at the moment our temperatures are about 6-7C instead of the 30C we had last year, and its damp

  • We are having a summer BBQ party and these ideas are going to come in handy to keep the kids entertained 🙂
