Modern and mythical worlds collide in a heroic epic adventure when Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief arrives on Blu-ray Disc and DVD June 29 from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment.
Based on the popular book series by Rick Riordan, the film follows trouble-prone Percy Jackson who finds himself having problems in high school… but that’s the least of his challenges. It’s the 21st century, but the gods of Mount Olympus have walked out of the pages of his Greek mythology texts and into his life, and they’re not happy – Zeus’ lightning bolt has been stolen, and Percy is the prime suspect. Learning he is the son of Poseidon, the young teen finds himself caught between angry and battling gods, and embarks on a cross-country adventure to catch the true lightning thief and unravel a mystery more powerful than the gods themselves.
I will say right now that I’m not a Harry Potter fan, so when I found out that this movie not only had (what I thought was) a similar theme but was also directed by Chris Columbos (who directed the first two Harry Potter movies), I thought it would be more of the same fantasty mixed in with teenage drama genre. I was so wrong!
It turns out, I really liked this movie! I’ve always had an interest in Greek Mythology. Something about even the Gods having human faults (and some bad ones at that!) makes them very appealing to me. The story does not make fun of or wash over the Greek Mythology influence in this movie. It releys heavily on it and captures the viewer’s interest (much like a soap opera to me in ways, but don’t tell your teenage son that when watching it). My husband and I both enjoyed the movie and had a good discussion about Greek Gods afterwards. It’s probably a little rich for my 6 year old but older kids would like it a lot. Check it out on DVD and Blu-ray June 29th!
