Say Anything…20th Anniversary Edition

Do you have a “Top 10 Song List of All Time”? Maybe if you haven’t actually taken the time to compile a list, surely you have songs that resonate whenever you hear them. For me, “In Your Eyes” by Peter Gabriel is on that list. I know the first time I ever heard the song was in 1989 when Say Anything was released in theaters. I was 12 and this 80’s classic movie was, to me at the time, my Romeo & Juliet.

You have Lloyd Dobler, the alt guy in 1989 who has his heart set on Valedictorian Diane Court – already this is appealing to so many people because it’s not the annoying “jock falls for the cheerleader” typical movie. The audience has two regular people who we genuinely root for as they fall in love, despite the obstacles around them, namingly Diane’s father. It’s not that he’s an evil man (though perhaps a little crooked as he’s being investigated by the IRS) but he wants Diane to go to college and be successful in life without any distractions from an underachiever like Lloyd. A break-up ensues and that’s where we get this pivital 80’s movie scene with Lloyd outside Diane’s window, holding up a boombox playing that classic romantic 80’s song.

With a crisp picture thanks to Blu-ray technology, and a ton of great bonus features including 5 alternate scenes, 10 deleted scenes, 13 extended scenes and A Conversation With Cameron Crowe (Say Anything was his directorial debut!), this Blu-ray debut is an essential movie classic to own (yes, I just referred to an 80’s movie as a classic…ouch.)
Say Anything…20th Anniversary Edition is perfect for the movie enthusiast on your list, your best girlfriend, or just a treat for yourself over the holidays. If you have a teenager in the family, you need to introduce them to Say Anything!
