The Whirl Balance Scooter by Prince Lionheart is the cutest thing on two wheels, minus the pedals. Why no pedals? Simply put, when young children are learning to transition from a tricycle or training wheels to a bike with two wheels, balance is the crucial skill they need to learn. Of course put any kid on a bike with two wheels and they’re instantly overwhelmed by all of it – the new pedals (is that a bell too?), the height, and the new handlebars and brakes.
Without any pedals to get in the way, the Whirl Balance Scooter encourages complete focus on balance. The Whirl is height-adjustable so children as young as 2 can start using it to learn about balance (it’s best for children ages 2-5 actually.)
Made with a 100% birch frame from a FSC certified forest (I googled the FSC and you can find more information about this organization here), the Whirl pays attention to detail with a padded seat, comfortable solid rubber hand grips and 12 inch rubber tires as well.
Nevaeh is almost 3 and balance is definitely not one of her strong skills! She was excited to try her new bike but confused as to how to ride it.
I liked how the bike was perfectly sized for her right now, but can grow with her. Her feet can easily touch the ground, so this is where her dad started explaining to her how to propel herself forward using her legs.
Of course, this takes a bit of coordination as well, another skill that this toddler needs to work on, so the Whirl is going to be a challenge for her this fall.
The Whirl, in my opinion, is going to give Nevaeh a solid 2 years of balance building before she is ready to try a bike with two wheels. Her next step will be a bike with training wheels (even then, the Whirl Balance Scooter will be a benefit to help her gain balance control and confidence on those teetering training wheels).
