2015 brought financial strain for many in Saskatchewan. Dropping oil prices, rising grocery prices in addition to our falling Loonie combine to make this a year many of us will be happy to see in the rear-view mirror. Saskatchewanians are resilient and we’re looking ahead to 2016 with optimism! Our love of family togetherness, adventure and yes, vacations endures.
According to a recent study commissioned by InterContinental Hotels Group, while one in four (25.64 per cent) western Canadians have changed their leisure travel plans due to tighter personal finances nearly three-quarters of western Canadians plan to travel at least once for leisure next year. Not only that, 65 per cent of western Canadians travelled at least once for leisure in 2015; significantly higher than the national average of 31 per cent.
What’s more, nearly three-quarters have budget at the top of their list of travel considerations followed by location (65per cent) hotel amenities (41 per cent) and saving time (41per cent).
With the Canadian exchange rate dipping, now is the time to stretch our travel dollars and visit world class destinations– all while staying close to our own front doors.
- Hockey fans can check out a Prince Albert Mintos game. The team won the 2014 Telus Cup. Then spend the night investigating the mysterious St. Louis lights, a regular exhibition of unexplained moving lights, before settling in at the Holiday Inn Express & Suites Prince Albert.
- Learn all about the unique history of Saskatchewan at the Western Development Museum in Yorkton (my home town!) Enjoy some Greek cuisine at local favourite Manos Family Restaurant (true story, I had rehearsal night dinner there before my wedding, Mano’s holds lots of great memories!) and spend the night at the Holiday Inn Express Yorkton East.
- Enjoy world-class drinks and dinner in Saskatoon, starting at the renowned Ayden Kitchen & Bar. Then take a tour of the premium micro distillery LB Distillers, and spend the night at the Holiday Inn Saskatoon Downtown.
Everyone should experience the joy of travel. Whether travelling as a family, or booking a business meeting, Holiday Inn Hotels offer a consistent and reliable welcoming experience across Canada and the Prairies (no surprises, you know what you get at Holiday Inn Hotels!)
As a family, we’re big fans of stay-cations within the province, since we’ve lived in four different locations around it. Later this week we’re headed from Regina to Saskatoon, in fact. It’s always nice to take a few days away and recharge (and I’ll admit it’s nice having someone else make my bed once in awhile too!) Utilize social media and of course tourism sites to find out what’s new and interesting in the location you’re visiting, and definitely ask about restaurants to find out for the best local eats.
We are big fans of stay-cations also, and Saskatchewan has so much to offer.
Love Stay -Cations So much to do in my home town
Staycations are a great idea. Fun and so much less expensive
I love staycations and with the hecticness of the holidays, it’s a welcome retreat without adding stress.
We’re not too far from Niagara Falls so we’ll sometimes take advantage of travel deals and head there for a night. Always nice to just have a change of scenery 🙂
We love having staycations.. Lots of fun to have that feeling of getting away without all the cost!
Staycations are a great idea, we never really appreciate what is in our own backyard
We do stay cations occasionally too
Me and hubby only do Staycations, not only because of money situations but because there is so much to do around our area, and plus neither one of us is going to be going on a plane!!
We are actually doing one this weekend! We rented a hotel room to take the kids watersliding and have a fun sleepover away from home – even though it was a 10 minute drive away!
I would love to do a staycation, looks wonderful 🙂
I wish we did something but we never went anywhere
Unfortunately a staycation around my home city is more expensive than a visit to another province!
I think Stay Cations are a great way to holiday and SK has allot to offer.
Staycations are a great idea – you get to know your own province better and you keep travel dollars here.
LOVE staycations. unfortunately hubby and I dont do them enough but when we do its extra special
I live in Banff, Alberta so I’m always in a vacation mecca! I have family in Saskatchewan so we often visit. Flat land is something different for us mountain people! 🙂
I haven’t taken a staycation in a while – sometimes staying closer to home winds up costing more than venturing out to an all-inclusive resort!
Staycations have so much to offer.
Staycations are a good idea, fun and so much less expensive
We love staycations, you can always find a nice place to go without spending to much money

I would so love to do this. Just to get away and see something different.
Yes we have done staycations before. They are a great way without breaking the bank and doing something fun.
great idea. It always surprises when local folks haven’t been to the local park, theatre, museum and so on………..
We enjoy either heading into the city or even down to Niagara Falls for our staycation 🙂
We love stay cations! Its a good quick getaway!
We did try a staycation the other year and enjoyed it.
Great idea for the upcoming holidays!
I’d love to stay somewhere home, but not home. 🙂 Haha, clean rooms and a pool.
We usually stay home or visit family.
I really love the idea of a STAYCATION – I have never had one, but it sounds like a great way to decompress and perhaps learn a little more about your own city!
I love this idea we had a staycation this fall and I loved it
Never been to Sask but is on my list of things to see 🙂
I love stay-cations. I don’t have to worry about strange beds and weird food.
We lived in SK (south of Saskatoon and in Regina) for a number of years, my daughter was actually born in Saskatoon, we did alot of staycations while there! Beautiful province!
I think staycations are great! I wish I can have the chance to do one one day!
Since we moved to the Creston Valley in BC, it is very easy to have a staycation. This is such an incredible beautiful area with a wide variety of things to do.
We mostly take vacations in our own province, but a least once a year we go on a fish trip to Dore, Sask
staycations are great! Any time away from work is great!
Kudo’s to you for promoting SK. My home province. I love it there despite all the jokes
I do like the little stay-cations within our province – There’s never ending things to do!
I love staycations great when you don’t have the funds for a big trip
We love stay-cations! We usually opt for Toronto or Niagara, since there is so much to do . We find great deals for hotels, dining, etc. It’s great to get a way for a couple of days and not break the bank!
Our stay-cations is limited to our own backyard for now, but when we get to visit other provinces I now know where to stay 🙂
I love having a night out – sometimes we stay in Vancouver even though it’s only a 30 min drive. It really feels like a vacation when you stay at a hotel. It’s so relaxing !!!
Staycations are fun for sure! i love the Prairies and have been to every place you mention here!
We have loved to staycation for years! BC has some amazing sights to see!
i’ve never had a staycation but we should try it. my fiancé is a medical fellow so he rarely has the time to travel very far, and if he does have the time he is too tired to plan anything
I would love to visit Saskatchewan. I spent one night in Regina once but that wasn’t enough to see anything!
We love taking Staycations! There are so many beautiful beaches to visit on Vancouver Island!
I love staycations, we usually get a hotel, do some shopping and go for dinner, fun times
I love staycations. There are so many areas of Ontario that I have yet to explore. We have beautiful countrysides and small towns that offer so much.
Our stay – cations usually include dance competitions, basketball tournaments, or visiting family. Holiday Inn express is usually our choice of Stay! Dance competition coming up in April in Saskatoon, this would be awesome!
