March 12th marks the beginning of Daylight Savings Time – the day most of Canada welcomes a much needed extra hour of sunlight after a long, dark and dreary winter! If you live in Saskatchewan like me, you simply adjust your TV viewing schedule (we don’t change our clocks, ever!)
For many, this extra hour of sun, along with the warming temperatures, means that more time is spent outdoors, making it sometimes challenging for parents to stay ahead of those not-so-top-of-mind household tasks.
To help you stay on track this spring and to build better habits all year long, consider placing a calendar in a high traffic area of your home – such as the kitchen or foyer – and place monthly, bi-monthly or quarterly reminders for the following tasks:
Replace toothbrushes: The Canadian Dental Association recommends you change your toothbrush every three months[1]. Place a smiley face sticker at the start of every third month of the year to remind you to buy new brushes for your family.
Check medicine expiry dates: Remember that all medicines expire, including vitamins and supplements. To ensure your medicine cabinet is up to date, schedule a simple calendar reminder for twice a year. This will remind you to check the expiry date and re-stock, if necessary.
Change the baking soda in your fridge: Placing a box of Arm & Hammer™ Fridge-n-Freezer™ or Fridge Fresh™ Baking Soda in your fridge or freezer helps to eliminate odours and keeps your fridge smelling fresh. While many use this simple tip, it can be easy to forget when it’s time to replace the open box. When you purchase a new box, jot down a replacement reminder on the box for a month’s time to maintain maximum odour elimination, ensuring your food stays fresher, longer.
Keeping healthy: Simple healthy habits, such as getting all of the required amount of fruits and veggies or taking vitamins, can slip our minds during hectic days. Vitafusion™ Vitamin D is a great addition to your routine, especially during the fall and winter months, when heavy clothes and cloudy weather can inhibit the production of Vitamin D in the body. To ensure your body gets all the Vitamin D it needs try placing a reminder in your calendar at the start of the fall season to start taking a supplement. Very few foods naturally contain this vitamin, meaning a supplement may be the best way to get your necessary intake[2]. Known as the sunshine vitamin, Vitamin D supports bone and teeth health – Vitafusion™ Vitamin D also comes in a delicious gummy and is the perfect alternative to a traditional hard-to-swallow pill.
Keeping a family calendar is a lifesaver for many families. What are some of your calendar reminders and tips that you think families should consider?
I do all these throughout the year. 🙂
Thanks for the great tips! I like the reminder to check expiry dates on medications. I know sometimes our meds get years old before they are tossed. I’ve also gotten in the habit of checking expiry dates on over the counter medications in stores because I have found expired meds on their shelves.
These are really great reminders! Thanks for sharing
I mark on the calendar when refills are needed for perscriptions
I am guiltyy of not checking expiry dates! Recently I moved & was shocked at some of the dates as I went through everything!
Funnily enough I have just been through our medicine cabinet and as usual am amazed at how many medications have expired!
I’ll have to do all these things. Thank you for reminding me.
All great tips, I try to do them all while doing my Spring Cleaning.
and then there is saying goodbye to winter tires.
I need to check out that Vitafusion™ Vitamin D. Getting some Vit D has been stressed by my doctor.
Also a good time to check your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors!
I’m terrible at remembering to change toothbrushes. The sticker idea is one I’m going to adopt.
These are great ideas of things that can be done when Spring arrives!
I live in Saskatchewan; like you so I dont change my clock really glad for that..Thank you for the reminders..
Thanks for the reminders. i do try to remember to change these items on a regular basis.
You are so lucky, I dislike daylight saving time very much!
These are great ideas I also check batteries on smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detector
I have to start better habits and start doing these great reminders!! Thanks!
We replace toothbrushes and keep the old ones for cleaning those little nooks and crannies!
I write the expiry dates on medication boxes and bottles in permanent marker, making it easier to know when to purge.
At the change to Daylight Savings, we change our batteries in the smoke detectors, but the other things we really do all year round.
We always change our batteries in smoke detectors and do the other things during the year.
Helpful reminders! I definitely need to replace my box of baking soda in the fridge!
Our family just had a check-up at the doctor & she informed us all about how important it is for all of us to be taking Vitamin D. I’ve already forgotten about it most days so the calendar idea is great as a reminder.
it’s about time I went and checked my medicine cabinet, thanks for the reminder 🙂
Good ideas! I haven’t thought of some of these to add into my spring clean
Thank you for sharing
Thanks for the great tips i usually do these during Spring cleanup!
Thanks for the tips. The tip of the toothbrushes is one i do forget unless the kids have strep than i always rid of them. This is definitely a big one !
Super great list of ideas! I especially like the medicine expiry check. It’s funny, usually in our house it’s when we need it that we look and realize it’s expired. Thanks for the tips.
Another reminder I need to put on my calendar is replacing the batteries in the smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector.
I am so happy spring is finally here. I need to clean up the garden and get out for some vit D!!!!
these are great reminders, I use my online calendar to keep track of important dates, events and to-dos!
Thanks for the great tips
great bunch of tips to keep on top of things in the house. I also change toothbrushes after a cold so I won’t reinfect myself.
